A WHITE JADE CARVING OF TWO MONKEYS WITH A PEACH CHINA, POSSIBLY QING DYNASTY OR LATER Carved out of a single piece of stone of flawless white tone. It depicts two seated and coiled monkeys with a peach. Its base is finely carved to depict the monkeys’ tails and feet. With a desirable and sweet polish. H: 4,2 cm Weight: 96,2 grams Notes: 1. The motif of monkey and peach has been popular in Chinese art since the tale of ‘Xiyou ji’ (西遊記 - Journey to the West), published in the Ming dynasty, narrating the story of a monkey (the Monkey King Sun Wukong - 孙悟空) stealing a celestial peach of longevity from the orchard of the Queen Mother of the West. Naturally, the symbolism is one of longevity as the peach (tao - 桃) symbolizes marriage, spring, justice and especially Daoist immortality. 2. A similar carving of a single monkey holding a peach was sold at SOTHEBY'S London, UK, 2013-11-06, lot 28, for GBP 110,500. A carving of similar large size and subject matter is illustrated in Robert Kleiner: Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 188 and sold at Christie's Hong Kong on 27th November 2007, lot 1557 白玉雕刻-灵猴献仙桃 中国,可能为清代 NOTE: CONDITION REPORTS AND MEASUREMENTS It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. PROPERTIES FROM A NOTED COLLECTION OF JADES AND SNUFFBOTTLES A WHITE JADE CARVING OF A LOTUS ROOT AND BIRD CHINA, QING DYNASTY The stone, of fine white color highlighted with added russet, is naturalistically carved as a lotus root or rhizome to each side and further depicted with a bird. L: 7,5 cm Weight: 117,8 grams Notes: 1. A seemingly rare and original depiction of the subject. Because the Buddha is often depicted as seated atop a lotus, the lotus is considered a sacred Buddhist symbol (one of Eight Auspicious Symbols) representing purity and detachment from worldly cares. Additionally, the Chinese word for lotus is ‘lianhua’ (莲花) or ‘hehua’ (荷花) and ‘lian’ is also the pronunciation of the words for continuous (连) and harmony (和). As a result, the lotus has the hidden meaning of ‘continuous harmony’. 2. A fine white jade stone blushed throughout with russet highlights. 3. Compare with a related subject jade carving offered at public auction at BONHAM’S London, UK, ‘Roger Keverne Moving On (Part II)’, 2021-06-07, lot 717, sold for £5,100. 白玉雕刻“好事连连” 中国,清代,可能为乾隆时期 NOTE: CONDITION REPORTS AND MEASUREMENTS It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. PROPERTIES FROM A FRENCH COLLECTOR OF JADE CARVINGS AND SNUFFBOTTLES AN UNUSUAL ‘DRAGON AND CLOUDS’ AGATE SNUFF BOTTLE CHINA This snuff bottle has been carved out of a single block of agate of greyish tones with a thick orange skin. It rests on a short ring foot, has a flattened body and round shoulders surmounted by a short cylindrical rim. The skilful carver used the orange parts, circumscribing the body of the snuff bottle, to depict a flying dragon, whilst he used the greyish part to rend the clouds, some of them detailed with engraving. PROPERTIES FROM A NOTED COLLECTION OF JADES AND SNUFFBOTTLES *A MUGHAL-STYLE JADE MARRIAGE BOWL OR CUP WITH LOOSE RING HANDLES CHINA, QING DYNASTY The bowl is thinly carved with fluted sides in the shape of a chrysanthemum. The foot is similarly carved as a downturned floral bloom. It is flanked by two handles shaped as bats together with loose rings. The jade stone has been very finely carved so it has a semi-translucent or diaphanous aspect. Offered at auction together with a parcel reticulated wooden stand. H: 3,9 cm - L: 17,8 cm Weight: 200 grams Note: 1.Large shallow bowls with two loose-ring handles carved from white or very pale green jade, such as the present lot, were deemed very suitable as prestigious gifts at a wedding, hence their typical designation as 'marriage bowls'. Many feature pairs of butterflies, bats or mythical beasts as the handles, the depiction of the animals or insects in pairs being suggestive of happy union. Bats in particular were a popular motif to celebrate a happy occasion such as a wedding, since the character for bat (蝠 - fu), is a pun for wealth and happiness (i.e. 富 - fu and 福 - fu). 2. Jades carved in this florid style originated in Hindustan in the Mughal period and began to come to China around the middle of the Qianlong Emperor's reign.
