NICHOLAS, with blued steel Breguet moon hands and seconds subsidiary numbered to the centre 313 and with power reserve sector to the side, the movement with reversed fusée, Earnshaw escapement, cut bi-metallic balance with cylindrical heat compensation weights, blued steel helical balance spring, flat strip detent (repairs) with jewelled locking stone to side of banking block, the movement and bowl are numbered 31316.5cm square Jean Aimé Jacob, 1793-1871, set up his workshop at St. Nicolas d'Aliermont near Dieppe and was formerly a pupil in the Breguet workshops. He was one of the many highly skilled horologists who resided in St. Nicolas, a region famous for producing huge numbers of carriage clock blanc roulants which was revolutionised by the brilliant clockmaker Honoré Pons who introduced modern mechanisation and a total reorganisation of the area.Scharf was a pupil of Victor Gannery (d.1851, also from St. Nicolas) who was himself pupil to Perrelet and then Winnerl. Their partnership is unrecorded in Tardy.
