He was one of the many highly skilled horologists who resided in St. Nicolas, a region famous for producing huge numbers of carriage clock blanc roulants which was revolutionised by the brilliant clockmaker Honoré Pons who introduced modern mechanisation and a total reorganisation of the area.Scharf was a pupil of Victor Gannery (d.1851, also from St. Nicolas) who was himself pupil to Perrelet and then Winnerl. Their partnership is unrecorded in Tardy.
