Cricket - ‘The Corner Stone of English Cricket’. Lt. Col. The Hon. Gerald French D.S.O. Original watercolour artwork by artist The Earls of Ypres produced for the dustwrapper of the cricket book ‘The Corner Stone of English Cricket’, describing the charm and ancient traditions of club cricket, written by French and published in 1948 by Hutchinson & Co of London. The water colour shows a cricket scene of a batsman standing in an ‘I Zingari’ red, yellow and black hooped cap and matching blazer with fellow players, umpires, marquees, flags, sight screen, trees and church spire to background. Titles in black and red ink to main image. Signed ‘Y’ by Ypres to lower right hand corner. The watercolour measures 14”x22”. Mounted, framed and glazed, overall 21.5”x31.5”. A truly unique piece of artwork by Ypres. Horizontal crease to lower part of artwork otherwise good/ very good condition. Sold with a first edition 1948 copy of the ‘The Corner Stone of Cricket’ with original dustwrapper showing the published artwork. Slight wear and loss to dustwrapper extremities otherwise in good condition Gerald French (1883-1970) played two First Class matches for the M.C.C. and twenty matches for Devon in the Minor Counties Championship. John Richard Lowndes French, 2nd Earl of Ypres (1881-1958), older brother to Gerald French, was the son of the British field marshal and the first commander of the British Expeditionary Force in World War I, Sir John French. He followed his father by joining the army and he served with the Royal Field Artillery but his military career was cut short following a riding accident. French was also a talented artist, something which did not endear him to his father.
