Equipped with black enamel and with hair behind glass, inscription inside probably: ''W.J.J. Scoficloi. Ob. Jan. 2. 1886. AE 56''. Hallmarks: W.G.M, crown, 18 (carat), anchor (guarantee mark: Birmingham), I (year letter 1885). Set with a table cut layer stone (approx. 10 x 6.8 mm). In good condition. Ring size: 17 mm / 53.5 mm. Width center piece: approx. 12 mm. Weight: 6.74 grams.

Himotoshi through the back and underside.HEIGHT 2.8 cmCondition: Very good condition, minor wear.Provenance: European collection.The famous wrestler Matanô Gorô throws a large stone at his rival Sanada Yoichi, a vassal of Minamoto Yoritomo (1147-1199), during a hunting trip of the commander Yoritomo. Yoichi effortlessly catches this and throws it back. But Asahina Saburô, who was in the service of Minamoto Yoshitsune (1159-1189), is also said to have demonstrated his enormous strength during the same hunting expedition by hurling a two-meter stone into the sea.
A WOOD NETSUKE OF A BLIND STONE LIFTERJapan, Meiji period (1868-1912)The wood netsuke finely carved to depict a crouching blind man trying to lift a boulder before him, wearing only a loincloth, his emaciated rib case visible, his inlaid eye popping out as a result of the strain of the weight. Two himotoshi at the underside, one of which shows a stained rim. HEIGHT 3.8 cmCondition: Overall good condition with chipping to toe of the left foot, the signature plate missing, and surface wear. HARA YOYUSAI: A FINE AND RARE GOURD-FORM SUZURIBAKO AND COVERBy Hara Yoyusai (1769-1845), signed YoyusaiJapan, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)The exterior of the gourd-form writing box and cover bearing an ochre ground finely decorated in gold and copper takamaki-e and pewter takazogan with e-nashiji to depict leafy vines, the interior of the box and cover bearing a roiro ground and decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e with e-nashiji to depict maiden flowers (ominaeshi) borne on leafy stems, the box further fitted with brush rests, a pouch-form ink stone, and a rectangular copper suiteki (waterdropper) with a ho-o bird amid clouds in high relief, the interior of the cover with the signature YOYUSAI.SIZE 24.6 x 21.7 x 4.5 cmCondition: Good overall condition with wear, extensive age cracks, flaking, minor losses, small nicks, light scratches, slightly warped. Provenance: Dutch collection.With a fitted silk cushion and dark wood storage box and cover.Literature comparison: Compare a related lacquered gourd, also by Hara Yoyusai and with leafy vines, in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 2015.79.425.
