A massive sculpted limestone model of a male torso, after the Gaddi Torso A massive sculpted limestone model of a male torso, after the Gaddi Torso, 20th century, naturalistically carved overall, supported on a metal rod issuing from a rectangular section stone pedestal, 215cm overall high The marble Gaddi Torso displayed in the Classical Sculpture Room of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence is a Hellenistic work of the 2nd century BC. Its dynamic tension and unusually refined modelling almost certainly place it amongst sculptures of the Pergamene school. Formerly considered to be the torso of a satyr when it was in the Gaddi collection in Florence, the sculpture is now thought to represent a centaur straining against his bonds, a theme that was represented several times in Hellenistic art, as it was an emblem of civilized control of Man's baser nature. The torso was very likely discovered in Rome, according to Giovanni Di Pasquale and Fabrizio Paolucci. It was certainly already in the collections of the Gaddi family in the early 16th century, when Florentine artists and sculptors knew it
A sculpted marble figure of a winged female Victory, a Nike A sculpted marble figure of a winged female Victory, a Nike, in the ancient Greek manner, portrayed standing and with outstretched wings, her drapery beneath her waist spreading outwards, on a rectangular section stone pedestal, 207cm high overall, 143cm wide The Samothrace Nike currently held at the Louvre in Paris is often cited as epitomising Helenistic sculpture, with its very obvious movement represented by the gloriously billowing drapery as well as her stance. Interestingly though, the portrayal of natural movement that was so inherent in Helenistic sculpture, being a direct departure from the purer but more static forms of the Archaic and early Classical sculpture is less pronounced in the example offered here. Indeed, elements of the work here are more reminscent of the sculpture of those earlier, more formal periods
A sculpted limestone model of the Samothrace Nike, 20th century A sculpted limestone model of the Samothrace Nike, 20th century, modelled after the Antique, with wings outstretched and drapery billowing around, atop a cylindrical stone plinth, 293cm high overall, the base 100cm diameter The Winged Victory of Samothrace, discovered in 1863, is thought to have been created around 200-190 BC. The work is 2.44 metres (8 feet) in height and was commissioned to commemorate victory in a sea battle as well as in honour of the goddess. It is famed for the way in which it conveys a sense of action and triumph as well as portraying artful flowing drapery, the goddess being portrayed as descending to alight upon the prow of a warship Rendered in grey and white Thasian and Parian marble, the figure originally formed part of the Samothrace temple complex dedicated to the Great gods, Megaloi Theoi. It stood on a rostral pedestal of grey marble from Lartos representing the prow of a ship (most likely a trihemiolia), and represents the goddess as she descends from the skies to the triumphant fleet The Hellenistic original is currently held in the Louvre collection in Paris
