A remarkable pale yellow rectangular cushion shape Ceylon sapphire of approximately 25cts gold-mounted as a pendant on gold chain pendant on gold chain. ProvenanceInherited from the jewellery collection of the vendor's Great Grandmother, Rita Fyers. Fyers was married to an Italian Duke who had chosen exile after marrying her as she was not Roman Catholic. They moved to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and became tea planters living a colonial life. Fyers was a colourful character, famed for controlling rogue elephants and was very popular with her employees on the tea plantations. The yellow sapphire was part of a collection of stones, all of Ceylonese origin that was passed down to her offspring on her death.
