The first Captain of the Empire Line founded George Duncan of Crail was John Thompson Watson (1828-1892), who was born Lower Largo on 12 July 1828, the son of David Watson, weaver, and Margaret Thompson. The father, David Watson, had been born at Craigrothie on 19 Jan 1793, the son of James Watson, weaver, and Elspeth Dall. David Watson died 11 Nov 1832 aged 39 years, and his stone is to be found in Largo Churchyard. John Thompson Watson was apprenticed under Catain William Ovenstone of Leith “for learning the occupation and business of a mariner or sea-faring busyiness” for a period of 4 years, starting May 1 1843. He received his Master’s Certificate (No 10539) on 15 June 1854. He was married to Jane Anderson (1829-1878) of Largo about 1850, and their first child, David Watson (1851-1939) was born on 3 Dec 1851. He started his apprenticeship at the age of 14 in 1865. He received his Master’s Certificate on 15 Oct 1874. He retired from the sea in 1904.
