Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923) - Bransford Bridge, Worcestershire Oil on canvas Signed lower left, inscribed Bransford Bridge,/Worcestershire./B.W. Leader. R.A. (on an old label on the reverse) Circa 1870 36 x 52 cm. (14 1/4 x 20 1/2 in) Provenance: Possibly purchased from the artist by Hawkins, May 1872 (£70); With Henry J. Mullen, Ltd., Harrogate; Private Collection, UK. Sale. Leader was a Worcestershire artist, and during the 1860s to mid 1870s lived in Whittington, a village just outside Worcester and not far from Bransford Bridge on the river Teme. Stylistically, the work is in keeping with Leader s pictures of this period. Bransford Bridge is located a few miles west of Worcester on the road to Hereford (today s A4103). The charming wooden bridge no longer exists, although the stone buttress supports still stand, obscured by the riverbank. There is a concrete replacement bridge standing today. Lot offered without reserve.
