A 19th Century gilt framed Oil on Canvas Study in the manner of Sir Edwin Landseer, a Bull Terrier lying upon a stone slabbed floor looking attentively at a Magpie who returns his gaze, signed and dated bottom right Earl, 1872, (probably for George Earl RA, 1824-1908), Earl exhibited 19 paintings at The Royal Academy between 1857 and 1882 including a Maltese and an Old English Mastiff, the oxidised frame verso bears old script "No 5" in red, 29.5cm x 39.5cm CONDITION REPORT: The frame is in reasonable condition, the canvas now exhibits some fairly large craquelere (mostly to the top half of the work) and upon close inspection, a 29cm horizontal 'hairline' mark can be seen where the upper rear stretcher has pressed against it. Other than these faults the painting is in reasonable order for age, we do not think the work has been cleaned at any stage.
