A gold finger ring of probable Post-Medieval date, c. 1550-1650. The ring demonstrates a circular hoop, with expanded scrolled shoulders that widen towards a projecting, tiered circular bezel. The latter is inset with an uncertain stone, now a rather grainy greyish blue colour. Diameter of hoop: 17mm. Weight: 1.98g. Originally with a bent hoop, now repaired and polished. Provenance: found Stinsford, Dorset. Treasure case 2017T299. Recorded on the PAS as SOM-D01838.
An incomplete cast copper-alloy anthropomorphic figurine of probable earlier Roman date, probably of the first or second century AD. Only about half the figurine survives, taking the form of a hooded and cloaked standing male before truncating abruptly in an old, worn break. Folds in the cloak are represented by parallel incisions, while on the face (though worn) the eyes and hair have been rendered quite realistically. Condition: good despite wear, even dark greenish patina. Length: c. 30mm. Discussion: this object may represent one of the genii cucullacti or 'hooded gods' apparently beloved in Late Iron Age and early Roman Britain. Named after their distinctive attire (the cucullus, a sort of conjoined hooded poncho), they are thought to be associated with the concepts of prosperity and fertility. A number of depictions are known, some in stone from Hadrian's wall, others in the form of small figurines somewhat similar to this potential example. Provenance: from the collection of an ex metal detectorist, found Oxfordshire/Berkshire/Hampshire in the 1980s or 1990s.
The upper stone component from a late Iron Age 'beehive' type quern probably dating c. 200 BC-AD 100. Hemispherical in plan, made from a grainy pinkish grey micaceous stone with some black deposits on one side. Irregularly worn on one side of its upper face. Height: 200mm. Diameter at base: c. 300mm.Provenance: from an old English collection, accompanied by a hand-drawn diagram detailing its method of use.
An incomplete cast copper-alloy zoomorphic fragment dating to the Post-Medieval or Modern period, c. 1700-1900. The object takes the form of a three-dimensionally rendered dragonesque head, with a grooved nose, incised eyes and gaping mouth. Truncated as the head transitions into the neck, this damage reveals that the internal area of the head is socketed. Length: c. 37mm. Discussion: based on its style, this object is almost certainly of fairly recent date. However, it remains uncertain what it originally was attached to either as a functional or decorative piece-though a vessel is one possibility. Provenance: found Stone, Buckinghamshire, 2015.
