A GEORGE V SILVER ART DECO COCKTAIL SHAKER, ROBERT EDGAR STONE (1903-1990) FOR ASPREY & CO LTD, LONDON, 1936 the planished slender ovoid body with screw-in cover, angular handle and screw capped short spout, notched borders throughout, cover with retailer`s stamp `ASPREY / LONDON`, underside of body with `R. E. Stone` signature and Asprey`s maker`s mark 24cm high, 793gr (25oz) R.E. Stone, renowned for his hand crafted silver, began his training aged fourteen in the silversmithing department of London`s Central School of Arts and Crafts. Consequently winning a two-year travelling scholarship from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, he travelled through Europe, including a stint in Paris at the Maison Hénin. Starting his own business in 1929, many of his pieces were retailed by Asprey`s. A number of silversmiths trained at his workshops in 22 Garrick Street, London, including Ian Calvert and Christopher Lawrence. Some fifty years after his apprenticeship, Lawrence remarked: `Stone was so puritanical that everything was raised - even if it could be spun. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!` (J. COLLECTION OF JEWELLERY comprising: a sapphire and diamond five stone ring, hallmarked Birmingham, 1902, size Q; a carved coral plaque ring, stamped 9ct, size P1/2; a cultured pearl pendant on a round link chain, hallmarked Birmingham 9 carat, 1977, chain length approx 560mm, 2.8gr; and a pair of cultured pearl earrings (6)
OPAL, DIAMOND AND ENAMEL BROOCH designed as a peacock, the breast collet-set with a pear-shaped cabochon opal with single-cut diamond wings, the tail plumage decorated with circular-cut diamonds and blue and green enamel ++Opal measures 19.4mmx12.5mm. Blue/green colour with some red/brown matrix, natural indentations but little obvious wear. Larger diamond by beak measures 4.7mmx4.7mmx3.0mm (0.4 carats, clarity Vs in collet setting, colour I/J). Other large stone measures 5mmx5.1mmx3.5mm (0.5 carats, clarity I2, colour M-O). Other stones weigh a total of 0.4 carats (not including single cuts). The blue enamel is worn particularly towards the edge and there are some small bubbles in the green only seen with close magnification. Reverse gold has some light wear, stamped 750 for 18 carat gold. In good condition.
