Nelson Dawson (1859-1942) was the founder of The Artificers' Guild in 1901, and he learnt his enamelling skills for Alexander Fisher.

LIVERPOOL, regulation white metal mounted hilt, the collar chiselled with a band of thistles, the pommel mount decorated to match and set with a faceted orange stone, carved basket weave wood grip rising to a spherical leaf carved top, set with white metal studs, contained in its white metal mounted leather scabbard, the locket decorated with a figure of St Andrew bearing a cross amidst thistles, the remaining mounts decorated with thistles and an engraved band of geometric design, complete with companion knife and fork decorated and set with stones to match.

V.C., the patent leather body with gilt mounts, the rayed gilt lance cap plate with applied pierced white metal crowned Royal arms surmounting battle honours and regimental title, gilt ribbon top collar surmounted by the ribbed black woollen top with bullion rope trim, bullion plume boss with bullion GVR cypher on a red velvet ground, feather plume, black velvet lined chin chain with lion's mask bosses, bullion caplines, leather and red silk liner with maker's label for Stone & Sons, Norwich, japanned storage tin with brass name plate, japanned plume tin. Murray was gazetted for the Victoria Cross on the 9th November 1897 during the Tirah campaign while attempting to rescue an officer of the Lancashire Fusiliers whilst under heavy fire. He served during the Second Boer War but resigned his commission upon his father's death in 1907 when he became the 8th Earl of Dumore. However he returned to the army as a staff officer during the First World War.
