A VICTORIAN LARGE CIRCULAR EMBOSSED COPPER PLAQUE by Billing & Co., London, originally affixed to the exterior of a building in Bath, centred with the head of a winged and bearded figure, his hair entwined with snakes, surrounded by the legend 'AQUAE A.D.-C SULIS A.D.-MDCCCLXXXVIII' [1888], 100cm diameter. Note: The head closely resembles the carved stone image from the pediment of the Roman Baths at Bath. Its identity has been the subject of much speculation and debate, some suggesting that, despite its masculine appearance, it is a gorgon. Others have proposed a classical or Celtic water god such as Oceanus.
