Mini Bio: Born in the 1870's, Ernest James Stone spent a good part of his life in London as a schoolmaster but retired to Falmouth before the Second World War. Besides being a prolific painter, he also loved books and left a considerable library. He died in 1965.

FU YIYAO (1947-), PAINTING STONE a fan leaf, mounted and framed, ink and colour on paperInscribed, with one seal of the artist Fu Yiyao (b. 1947) is the daughter of the Master Chinese artist Fu Baoshi (1904-1965).The exquisite calligraphy by Fu Yiyao of a poem, ‘Painting Stone’ by Liu Shang (active 766-779). Liu Shang was a poet and painter in the Tang dynasty, and his poem described that the stone with lichen had been painted for a thousand years, and it symbolised the quality of faithfulness. The poem quotes the legend of ‘Nuwa bu tian’ to express that the stone could become very helpful in saving the world.

(2) 7cm high, 5 troy ounces grossRobert Edgar Stone, known professionally as R.E. Stone, was an English silversmith. Born in 1903, his work is famous for its handcrafted style. When he was 14, Stone enrolled at the Central School of Arts in London; during his time with the school, he won a scholarship from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. He founded his workshop in 1929, and some of his most famous work includes the various products he manufactured to commemorate George V’s Silver Jubilee in 1935. Stone’s work is distinctive for being largely handmade, and he was noted for stamping his work with a facsimile signature, as in this example. He died in 1990, and his items are now in very great demand among collectors

Stone currently secure in mount. Synthetic rubies bright and matched in colour, with colour zoning visible with x10 loupe. Claws are low and will need attention. Under bezel and mount are thin, but no signs of major splitting. All over minor scratches and blemishes commensurate with wear.
A carved stone memento mori fragment, possibly alabaster, modelled in the 15th century Nottingham manner with high relief skulls and other bones, inset carved dragonfly to base, 35.5cm high CONDITION REPORT:The piece shows numerous worn and pitted areas across the surface, and areas of greenish patination. There is a fracture running across the top left section of the piece. All the carved details show wear throughout, and there are likely to be areas of loss, although these are difficult to distinguish given the extent of the wear. The piece would require carbon dating to give an accurate indication of age, which we are unable to supply.
