•ROBERT OSCAR LENKIEWICZ (1941-2002) THE ALCHEMIST IN HIS LABORATORY Signed, oil on Masonite 91 x 120cm. * A typed label on the reverse reads: Michael Maier (the German 17th alchemist) can be seen observing the successful results of a long term transmutation. In his alembic are the `three stages` of the WORK, shown by the black, white and red birds; the body, soul and spirit in man; mercury, salt and sulphur in chemistry. It is these elements that when united in a special way produce the PHILOSOPHER'S STONE. On his table can also be seen the athanor, in the form of a wooden model, examples of which were reportedly seen in the `Schools` of the Alchemical masters, and which symbolised the seven `levels` of the human body. The book is opened at the pages illustrating alchemical symbols and the work of `Abraham the Jew`, the legendary figure who taught N. Flamel the French alchemist. The central figure can be seen holding the vase in which the sun and the moon emerge, these emphasise the importance of `opposites` in the alchemical process. To his right is the characteristic musician whose `melodies` were expected to help in some way the efforts to attain the Stone. The artist's son has informed the vendor that he believes that this work dates from c.1968. The artist's self portrait is found in the face of the central figure. ++ A few scratches and grazes lower right and elsewhere
