During the 17th Century, the majority of enamellers who worked on watch cases resided in France or Switzerland. The demand for enamelled watches in Europe and particularly, the Netherlands, resulted in huge numbers of empty enamelled cases being imported and then fitted with locally made movements.Les Deux Frères Huaut, (also spelled 'Huaud' or 'Huault'), who worked on the present example, were some of the finest enamellers to come out of the Geneva School. Pierre Huaut (1612-1680) was a French enameller who settled in Geneva in c.1630 as master enameller and painter. Three of Pierre's eleven children would become celebrated enamellists and more than likely apprenticed under him; Pierre II (1647-1698), Jean-Pierre (1655-1723) and Ami (1657-1724). Pierre II set up on his own in around 1680 and then went into partnership with his brothers a couple of years later. Jean-Pierre and Ami moved to Berlin in 1686, where they were commissioned by Elector Frederick William of Brandenburg of the Prussian Court. With thanks to Oliver Cooke for access to the British Museum archive. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

S.(Simon) Okolski 1641, No.6422Signed: MovementSize: 61mm Accompaniments: Fitted wooden box, winding key, three spare 18K gold case back panelsFootnotes:Deriving from the private collection of a German Professor of Medicine, the current lot is to be offered for sale from the descendants of the family. The Professor had a great love of travelling and collecting which took him, alongside his career, to many of the annual auctions in London and Geneva with certain of his pieces being exhibited in Germany. This watch is an excellent representation of what can be achieved through passion, appreciation and an eye for quality. Privately commissioned, the watch case features beautifully enamelled panels to the fore and reverse whilst the Baume & Co movement is a skilfully executed piece of horological craftmanship from the turn of the century.Applied to the case are two handsomely finished pieces of enamel work. The front depicts the Professors family crest which hails back to Prussia in the 1840s. The lore of the family is that during battle a Knight pulled a small oak tree from the ground before proceeding to save the life of one of the kings involved in the skirmish. In gratitude, the King made the Knight a Baron and named the land after him which can now be found in modern day Poland. To the reverse of the case is the more familiar Rod of Asclepius. Not to be confused with the Caduceus borne by Hermes, the rod is represented by a single serpent wrapped around a staff and is commonly associated with healing and medicine. Asclepius was the son of Apollo and Coronis, a mortal, and was taught the art of healing by the centaur Chiron. His renown for healing steadily grew but it was not until after his death when he was smote down on Zeus's orders that his cult established fully. As such it is believed that it is in this process that the staff and serpent merge to form one icon as they originally were seen as separate symbols. The desire to ensure the watch represented something personal and of high quality by the Professor is furthered by the engraved inscription on the cuvette by Simon or Szymon Okolski, a celebrated heraldry specialist and historian. Roughly translated, the Latin inscription is a reminder of what as human beings we need in order to live a wholesome and rewarding life – virtue, integrity and honesty. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

He was one of the outstanding clockmakers of the 18th century, producing a large number of fine clocks for the home market and export and was also instrumental in the perfection of the cylinder escapement. His reputation for excellence in design and execution lead him to the position in 1762 of Clockmaker to King George III. For this role he was paid 150 pounds per annum. Roughly at the same time he took into partnership his son Edward with later works dating from 1769 onward signed '& Son'.The repousse of the current lot depicts a 9 year old Hannibal standing before a statue of Hercules, with his sword placed on the altar, swearing an oath to his father Hamilcar to never be a friend of the Romans. Through time the significance and original meaning of this oath has evolved and it is now not uncommon to use Hannibal as a metaphor for an intense and unyielding hatred. At the age of 26 Hannibal became the commander in chief of the Carthaginian army and went on to accomplish a legendary defeat of the Romans. For mention of this watch see page 30 in The Art of the Gold Chaser in Eighteenth-Century London by Richard Edgcumbe where the current example is described as an example of a late rococo case with scenes previously used by Moser.A further example of this repousse scene is illustrated as Fig.61a in the same text. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
