A massive 19th century carved portland stone statue of George Canning, the figure 216cm high, the plinth 40cm high. Provenance Sotheby's Sussex 20th May 1998 Lot 583. George Canning 1770-1827, a progressive politician and briefly prime minister for only five months, is buried close to his mentor, William Pitt the younger, in Westminster Abbey. One well know commemorative statue of him by Sir Francis Chantry is dated 1834 and positioned in the North Transept of the Abbey, better known as Statesman aisle, where he stands alongside his son, Earl Canning, by J.H. Foley and his cousin Stratford Canning by Sir J.E Boehm. Please note this lot will require specialist moving.

A stone fireplace designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, for Ashby St. Ledgers Manor House, Northamptonshire, 113 x 135.4cm, internal measurements: 76.5 x 91.5cm. Provenance: By family repute this fireplace belonged to the present vendor's father who was agent to the 3rd Lord Wimborne. The Manor House at Ashby St. Ledgers was bought by the 1st Lord Wimborne in 1903 and was extended by Sir Edwin Lutyens between 1904-1938. The house was subsequently reduced in size by Jellicoe and Coleridge in 1967-8 when the 1904 Service wing and 1923 wing were demolished. The fireplace would have come in to his possession in 1967-8.
