AN ANDEAN OPAL NATURALISTIC NETSUKE by Guy Shaw (1951- 2003), the stone carved as an irregular structure leaving a small area of skin which the artist has carved into a woodlouse, the stone of rich sea green tone with brown and white markings, signed with monogram, late 20th century, 2.5" long. Guy Shaw is widely recognised as one of the greatest Western netsuke carvers. As well as being highly acclaimed in America and Europe, his work has also been well-received in Japan. This piece, which was purchased directly from the artist, exemplifies Shaw's regard for natural themes and the artist considered it one of his most important works.

Provenance: Christies London, 29th October 1998, lot 164. Private collection, Dorset. Wu Changshuo (1844-1927) was a noted painter, calligrapher and seal artist of the late Qing and early Republic period. He was also the leader of the Xiling Seal Art Society. Inscribed inkstones by the artist are scarce. An example with plum blossom decoration is extant in the Brooklyn Museum, USA (1996.119). As well as being signed Wu Changshuo on the upper surface the present lot has a Wu Junqing seal-signature on one side, which indicates the artist's birth name.
A CHINESE PALE CELADON JADE EIGHT-LOBED VESSEL, the oval form suggesting a flower, the translucent stone with some russet markings, the wide body above a small pronounced foot, Qing, 17th/18th century, 5.25" long. Provenance: Private collection, Ireland. This fine lobed vessel represents an early Qing Dynasty revived interest in Tang and Song decorative arts. Although the form of a lobed vessel is iconically Chinese, it was almost certainly inspired by Sassanian prototypes in silver.

The War having concluded he stayed east and took up the position as assistant political officer in Iraq until 1922. It was under his next post as the Finance Minister to the Sultan of Muscat and Oman, Taimur bin Feisal that Thomas is most famously remembered. Lawrence of Arabia famously purported in 1929 that the only way to cross the Rub' Al Khali also known as the Empty Quarter (a barren expanse of desert covering 250,000 square miles of Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates and Yeoman) was by an airship. However after a tortuous 58 day long expedition Thomas and his team reached the sea at Doha, the unforgiving desert having not claimed a single life. Thomas is the author of two books Arabia Felix (1932) and The Arabs: The Epic Life Story of a People Who Have Left Their Deep Impress On The World (1937) The University of Cambridge holds in their library nine boxes of 'manuscripts, articles, book reviews, lectures, notes, correspondence and maps' as well as a copy of a film made by Thomas in Arabia circa 1928/1929 and even a portrait of him by Walter Westley Russell
