Report number 1226015444, dated 3rd September 2021.Historically, across many cultures, the ruby has long been regarded as a highly important gem offering cures for illness, peace, protection, wealth and status and in India, rubies were bestowed with the Sanskrit name, 'Ratnaraj' or 'King of Precious Stones'. Over the past 800 years, the finest rubies have been found in the Mogok Stone Tract region of Burma, now Myanmar. This continues to be the case today, despite rubies being mined in various other locations, such as Afghanistan, Thailand, Tanzania and Madagascar. The best Burmese rubies are the gold standard against which all other rubies are judged. Throughout the world, they are prized for their rich, vibrant red hue and fiery radiance, caused by high levels of chromium saturating the ground from which they are mined combined with strong fluorescence. Today, the continued extraction of deposits in the Mogok Stone Tract region is leading to depleted sources of gem-quality crystals that tend to be quite small, adding to the beauty and rarity of a truly fine ruby exceeding 5.00 carats. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
