David K Stone (Oregon, 1922 - 2001) "District of Columbia circa 1800" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 29c District of Columbia stamp issued September 7, 1991. After the Revolutionary War, Congress decided that the federal government needed a permanent home. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton suggested that the capital be built on federal land, and in 1791 President George Washington selected territory along the Potomac River -- ceded from both Maryland and Virginia. In 1800 the federal government took up residence in Washington City, in the newly-established District of Columbia. The city -- initially governed by Congress and later by Congressionally-appointed commissioners -- underwent massive changes during the next one hundred years. The British set fire to the city in 1814, burning both the Capitol and President's Residence. Enormous growth following the Civil War and both World Wars expanded the city's population base, and local clamors for equal political participation were finally heard in 1964 -- when District residents cast their first Presidential election ballots. David K Stone (Oregon, 1922 - 2001) "Robert Frost" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the Shapers of America Collection produced throughout 1986 and 1987. Robert Frost summed up his own life in a few lines: "I had to have a job. I ran away from college and went to teaching. I got where I wanted to do the telling, instead of being told. My poetry and my teaching are one." And, it was in poetry and teaching he "found the meaning of life only where need and love are one, and the work is played for mortal stakes." He taught first in a small academy, then at Amherst College, then to the whole of America. Reciting poetry everywhere he went, Robert Frost followed his own advice, "You mustn't leave anything the way it was before you touched it." What he touched were the simple things -- the snow-clad hills and the flowing brooks and the elms and the birches; the hardscrabble farms and their hardscrabble farmers and their brave but weary wives. His poems offered simple but profound commentary on the American experience. Frost first won his reputation in England, but in the end, he was happy only in the States. He became, unwittingly, the poet laureate of America - a poet equally loved by the plain people who had no difficulty understanding, and by the critics who knew they were in the presence of truths sometimes too deep to understand. Frost became a national possession. When John Kennedy was inaugurated President, it was Robert Frost who spoke at the inauguration. His was a life of fame and recognition, but as he, himself, put it, all he wished to leave behind "was a few poems it would be hard to get rid of." Image Size: 17.75 x 20.75 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 26.75 in. Unframed. (B11411)
David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "New York Statehood" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c New York Statehood stamp issued July 26, 1988. In the state of New York, the Anti-Federalists had done a good job of organizing and, but for the timing of their convention, they might have won the vote and kept New York out of the new United States. Thanks to machinery set in motion by the powerful Governor George Clinton and his associates, the Anti-Federalists found a receptiveness to their point of view in New York. There, articles appeared in newspapers against, as well as for, the Constitution, and the opinions and viewpoints of "Cato," "Brutus," "Sidney," and "A Republican" were immortalized in print. In February, a committee of seven Anti-Federalists organized in Albany to help manage the elections of delegates to the state convention. They corresponded with other New York Anti-Federalists, wrote articles for the newspapers, and distributed pamphlets. When the convention convened in Poughkeepsie in the summer of 1788, the vast majority of delegates were opposed to ratification. But soon the news arrived that New Hampshire and Virginia had ratified, and the delegates realized that a failure to ratify now would leave New York outside of an already-existing Union. Aaron Burr put it succinctly, stating that, "after the adoption by ten states, I think it became both politic and necessary that we should also adopt it (the Constitution)." New York ratified the Constitution on July 26, 1788, the eleventh state to do so. Image Size: 20.75 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 26.75 x 24 in. Unframed. (B11656)
David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "United States Senate" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c United States Senate stamp issued April 6, 1989. The stamp on this First Day Cover was released by the Post Office in honor of the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the first meeting of the Senate. Though the idea for the Senate originated during the Constitutional Convention in 1787, it actually began work in 1789 after ratification of the Constitution. Made up of two Senators from each state, the first Senate convened with only twenty-two members, as two of the original thirteen states had yet to ratify the Constitution. The Constitution provides that a Senator must be thirty years of age, have been a citizen of the United States for at least nine years, and be a resident of the state from which he or she is elected. Traditionally, a Senator is also from a wealthy background, is well educated, likely to be a lawyer, and even more likely a veteran. His or her position in the government, coupled with the structure of the Senate itself, provides a Senator considerable power. The Senate has a complex organizational makeup, relying on committees and subcommittees to process legislation. Each Senator may serve on various committees and virtually every Senator is chairman of at least a subcommittee. Thus, a Senator is likely to influence the decisions made in a number of different committees and subcommittees. This affords him or her the opportunity to be a spokesperson for the Senate as a whole on issues handled in his or her committees. Image Size: 17.75 x 21 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 27 in. Unframed.
