Report number 12320, dated November 20th 2018Throughout history, spinels have been confused with rubies on account of their very similar mineral components. The gems were mined predominantly in central and south-east Asia and this gave rise to their being known as 'Balas' rubies after the Badakshan area of north Afghanistan. Here, particularly large and important specimens were found from the 1st century AD and, in the 13th century, Marco Polo is recorded as stating that all spinels mined there were property of the king. The gems were so highly regarded that they were reserved for royalty and were often presented by the king as official gifts.Indeed, spinels have made their way into a multitude of royal collections, from Iran, to France, to Russia, with perhaps the most famous currently housed amongst the British crown jewels. In 1367, as payment for military aid, Pedro the Cruel presented Edward, Prince of Wales with a 170 carat uncut polished spinel. Also known as 'The Black Prince', the stone became 'The Black Prince's Ruby' and has been treasured by the British monarchy ever since. The crystal now rests regally in England's Imperial State Crown and is on display at the Tower of London.Although technological advances mean that the spinel is no longer mistaken for a ruby, confusion over this crimson gem is still common. Since the 1920s, synthetic spinel has flooded the market to such an extent that many no longer realise that it is an authentic stone and associate it purely with costume pieces. In actual fact, spinels are remarkable jewels that demonstrate a range of colour and their strong durability makes them ideal for continued wear.Condition Report: Of purplish-pink hue, medium tone, good transparency, some minor natural inclusions visible under 10x magnification and a couple under a bright light sourceDiamonds: bright and well matched.
