On the declaration of war in August 1914 he took command of light cruiser HMS Doris in the eastern Mediterranean, with instructions to launch amphibious raids on Turkish positions along the Syrian coast. His demolition of the railway at Alexandretta in December 1918 forced the Turks into negotiations by which they agreed to destroy their own railway engines and stores, under British supervision, a somewhat farcical event which was key to Churchill's appraisal of Turkish military capability and his decision to launch the Gallipoli campaign, during which the Doris provided support for the Anzac landings. Larken later commanded battleship HMS Valiant (1922-4), was promoted rear-admiral in 1924, vice-admiral in 1929, and admiral in 1933.
