FERNAND TOUSSAINT (1873-1956) OIL PAINTING ON ARCHED-TOP CANVAS, UNSTRETCHED A circa 1900 Symbolist study of a young lady standing full-length in a dancing pose in a garden setting, wearing a flowing, diaphonous dress, her hair garlanded with ribbon-tied poppies, ribbon festooned bars held in her outstretched hands, her head flanked by roses suspended from a scrolliated arch, a rams headed tripod incense burner at her side, the lower part of her dress embroidered with dragonfly, standing on the tips of her naked feet, above formal strapwork and chimerical-headed foliate scrollwork centring a scrolliated vacant cartouche, Signed 92" x 36 1/2" (233.5cm x 92.5cm) PROVENANCE; Reputedly part of the original decorative scheme of a property known as 'Illawala' near Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, built for C.V. Haworth, Chairman of Blackpool's Alhambra (Later Palace) Theatre. The foundation stone was laid by Vesta Tilley in 1902, and it was later owned by Sir Fred Emery M.P. for Salford, and in more recent years an infamous nightclub with association with the controversial film director Ken Russell. Overall condition is good. considering for a number of years the canvas has been kept rolled; the original colours hidden by a veil of darkened yellow varnish
