The uber-cool sports saloon with the cachet of being Europe's first turbocharged production car The fastest BMW then produced with an output of 170bhp, a full 40bhp more than the Tii Only 1,672 examples built, all left-hand drive and very few survive today First imported to the UK on 01/07/1982, this is an original factory car On offer from a private collection, topical, extremely rare and highly collectable The 2002 Turbo was launched at the 1973 Frankfurt Motorshow and was Europe's first turbocharged production car. With an output of 170bhp and 240Nm/ feet of torque, it was the fastest BMW yet produced, lifting that mantle from the superb 2002 Tii.Described by one journalist as "a punch in the kidneys", BMW's new super-saloon quickly earned a reputation for being a bit of a troublemaker. From outraging the German press with 'irresponsible' cosmetics to tempting fate with turbo-lag that was a touch focussing, the 2002 Turbo ultimately rose to cult status.Equipped with a KKK turbocharger and Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, the engine unit from the base 2002Tii was persuaded to produce around 170bhp, a substantial 40bhp more than the donor car. BMW claimed a 0-60 mph in just 6.9 seconds which was quite remarkable for a small saloon nearly 50 years ago.Only produced in late 1973 and 1974, when production ceased with the arrival of the '70s oil crisis, there were just 1,672 examples built, all left-hand drive, and very few survive today. Replaced in 1975 by the famous '3' series, it was the last car made when BMW was still regarded as a specialist low volume niche manufacturer. The car presented here is an original factory car that was imported to the UK on July the 1st 1982. In 2007, it was offered by respected specialists, Munich Legends, having had the entire underside stripped back to bare metal, repaired and any areas of corrosion treated, before being stone-chip primed. Three owners, later it was exported to Ireland in June 2009, before returning to the UK in 2014. The car appears very original and well cared for and has probably enjoyed some fresh paint at some point in the past but still presents very well today. The history file shows over £4,000 spent in 2007 with Munich Legends, a further £1,400 on servicing and maintenance in 2013/14 and new front discs and pads fitted in 2016. The odometer shows 8,919 kilometres today which we can only presume is a total of 108,919km - which would equate to 67,680 miles. Sold by us previously in 2014, this very special car has formed part of a private collection, being maintained and stored to a high standard and is supplied with a UK V5C and a folder of invoices. In 2018, a BMW 2002 Turbo sold at auction in the USA for an incredible $192,500 illustrating the extraordinary surge in demand for these special cars. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a significant car from BMW's past that is highly collectable and, perhaps more importantly, really good fun to drive.
