A Victorian sapphire and diamond cluster brooch, the central rectangular mixed cut sapphire with canted corners measuring 12.5mm x 9.3mm, set to a six-point star surround, each point set with three mixed cut diamonds, hinged pin and loop fastening to reverse, 25mm x 20mm, weight 5.4gms This sapphire has been assessed by The Gem and Pearl Laboratory as natural, of Sri Lankan origin, and shows no evidence of heat treatment.No obvious inclusions visible with the naked eye or 10x. No obvious colour zoning visible with the naked eye or 10x. There is notable windowing to the centre of the stone. The stone shows considerable nibbling and scratching to the sapphire. All diamonds are present, but several show large chips and nibbles, general scratching and wear commensurate with age and use. Settings appear secure, no splitting or signs of repair - there is notable thinning and some loss to the metal to the back of the brooch around the sapphire. Hinged pin in working order. An early 20th century sapphire and diamond transitional ring, the central round mixed cut sapphire measuring 4.5mm diameter, set to a white metal lozenge shaped surround set with old cut diamonds, head 13.5mm x 12.5mm, continuing to diamond set shoulders and plain polished shank, stamped ‘PLAT’, ring size O, weight 3.3gmsCR; The ring required professional cleaning, and this may effect colour and clarity gradings. There is a flat reflective inclusion to one side of the stone, visible with 10x, but no with the naked eye. No other obvious inclusions visible at 10x. Sapphire does show moderate nibbling to facet edges and general scratching and wear throughout. The diamonds are largely well matched, however the diamond pictured right appears slightly darker - this may be owing to dirt build up, and may change once cleaned. Diamonds appear white and sparkly when viewed face up with the naked eye. Diamonds appear to be SI/VS in clarity, mostly SI. A couple of the diamond show small chips and surface reaching fractures, and general scratching and wear throughout. There are signs of possible break and repair to the gallery, which shows possible solder repair. Gallery shows some denting and minor thinning - see pictures. Shank in good order, no splitting, major thinning, misshaping or signs of repair. General scratching and wear throughout. See additional images.
A mid-20th century star sapphire and diamond 18ct gold ring, the central oval cabochon blue sapphire weighing 9.39ct (13.4mm x 10.9mm x 5.9mm), continuing to scrolling shoulders set with brilliant cut diamonds, plain polished 18ct yellow gold shank, ring size M 1/2, weight 10.7gms, with accompanying report from The Gem & Pearl Laboratory, report no. 22472, stating that the carat weight is 9.39 carats, that the stone is a natural star sapphire, shows no evidence of heat treatment, and the origin opinion is Sri Lanka. CR; The central stone is in good order, no cracks, chips or losses. Some minor scratching and wear commensurate with age and use. A few internal fractures running just below the surface are visible to sides of the stone, visible under 10x. There is a very minor rattle from the ring when moved, indicating that the stone is very slightly loose in it's setting, however the claws are in good order and the stone is secure - some tightening may be required. All diamonds are present and in very good order, no cracks, chips or losses. Settings in good order, some scratching and wear commensurate with age and use, but no splitting, major damage or repair. Shank in good order, moderate scratching and wear commensurate with age and use, but no major thinning, splitting, resizing or repair.

A few of the smaller diamonds show a little more draw of colour, but largely they are well matched. No obvious inclusions visible with the naked eye. There are inclusions visible under 10x in some stones - clarity varies from stone to stone, however there is nothing lower then an SI. All diamonds are present - a few show small chips and nibbles, and general abrasions and wear commensurate with age and use, but largely they are in good order. Settings are in good order, some minor splitting, but no major damage or repair. Some misshaping to the pin, but largely it is in good order, working.

Lazarus Tandi, Zimbabwe, African 20th century. A verdite stone carved sculpture grinding sorghum. 32cm high. Lazarus Tandi (b.1955) is from a family of sculptors in the Bindura district of Zimbabwe. He and his brothers James (b.1956) and Nicholas (b.1948) are known for their work in the Shona tradition, using predominantly local soapstone and verdite.
