AMENDMENT - CONFIRMED PEKING GLASS A fine Chinese carved White Nephrite Jade Rams head HU Vase, Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1912). The finely carved vase depicting a Recumbent Ram cover above shoulder level Rams Head loose ring handles. Each side of the flattened HU form vase body delicately carved in low relief with two of the "Four Gentlemen" Chinese symbols of Prunus and Orchids amongst a rocky outcrop. The white jade vase is raised on a flared and stepped oval foot. The elegant carving and use of space highlighting the lustrous quality of the natural white jade stone. (Condition Good - No cracks or chips, Minor black, white and russet inclusions within the translucent white stone), Height 14.5 cms, Width 11 cms (max). Notes: Prunus, Orchid, Bamboo and Chrysanthemum are known in Chinese culture collectively as the Four Gentlemen. They represent dignity, quietude, fortitude and simplicity, which in the Chinese tradition are the qualities every Chinese gentleman strives to attain.
A very fine and rare Chinese white Jade carving of a Phoenix (Qianlong period 1736-1795), extremely finely carved, the Phoenix tightly grasping a lotus stalk with flowers in its beak, flower heads and leaves trailing and with finely carved and incised wings and feathers, a flattened lotus flower rests upon the centre of its back and the underside similarly very finely detailed and with legs with five claws folded underneath the body in low relief, the stone with an even pale tone, with minor brown striations and minor inclusions, approx. 13.4cm long, approx. 6.3cm high (highest point) Provenance: Ex. Sir Sydney Barratt, Crowe Hall, Bath. (Condition Report: Some extremely minor chipping to extremities).
