A pair of late 19th century carved Chinese hardwood Water Buffalo figures, each with an elderly man and a child on its back, the body of the animals profusely inlaid with short sections of white metal wire representing fur and the sages' robes with Oriental symbols and standing on naturalistically carved bases, the animals set with black stone eyes, each approximately 9½in. (24cm.) long and 10¼in. (26cm.) high, one eye missing and part of one horn broken. (2)

An agate pedestal dish, of octagonal form, raised on an agate octagonal pedestal foot with silver mounts, height 1.75ins, diameter 1.75insCondition Report: No obvious repairs visible. Various inclusions and marks to agate, including brown ring to interior and to what the naked eye appear to be line cracks, but are probably marks within the stone. No marks to metal.

WW1 “Gunner Ace” Attributed Royal Flying Corps Officer Observer Maternity Tunic khaki plastron front with concealed composite buttons. Lower hidden pockets with plain flaps. The left breast with embroidered Observer half wing. Collar badges never fitted. Shoulder rank stars absent. Full cotton lining. Collar with blank name tag. Together with a pair of khaki cord, wide leg breeches. Inner calf reinforcement patches. Lace calf fastening ... Slash hip pockets. Internal tailor’s label with faint ink name “Lt Thornton”. Minor moth nips 2 items.Attributed to WW1 Gunner Ace with Five Kills Lieutenant Anthony Joseph Hill Thornton who was born in 1898, his records show that he joined 22 Squadron as an Observer in November 1917 which at that time was operating the Bristol Fighter aircraft. On the 2nd April 1918 whilst on patrol with his pilot Captain John Everard Gurdon DFC* (28 Kills) , his aircraft was engaged by a number Fokker D1 enemy aircraft after a dog fight the pair would claim two aircraft. On the 7th May whilst on patrol with another Bristol Fighter of 22 Squadron they took part in what would become known as the “two versus twenty” fight. The pair were attacked by twenty enemy fighters, by the end of the dog fight the pair would claim three of the eight victories”. By the end of his partnership with Gurdon he would be involved in the destruction of 6 enemy aircraft and credited with five kills, making him a Gunner Ace. His records show he was admitted to Hospital on the 12th May 1918 and returned to Blighty. After various Home Establishment postings he was demobbed on the 5th February 1919. In 1939 he was settled in the village of Oulton Heath near Stone in Staffordshire, his trade being a watch maker. At the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the local Stone No. 17 Staffordshire Home Guard (See Battlederess in the Auction). Sold with a copy photo of him in later life at his trade as a watch maker.

Pleated chest pockets with buttoned flaps. Lower extended belt. Both arms with printed “Home Guard” titles over “NS17”. Embroidery Lieutenant rank stars. The left breast with 1st pattern embroidery Observer wing over WW1 War and Victory medal ribbons. Internal issue label. Minor repairs. Moth nips to rear. Together with a khaki Other Ranks field service cap. KC bronzed General List buttons. Badge absent. Some wear. Sold with a copy photo of him in later life at his trade as a watch maker.
