Their auspicious symbolism derives from the play on the Chinese word for finger citron, foshou, homophonous with the words for blessings, fu, and longevity, shou. Hence, they were a popular subject in jade carvings of the Qing dynasty. The top lifts off the base. One handle looks like it has been glued back on. There are some chips around the top edge and two large chips to the top of the base, which are not visible when the top is on. Weathered on all sides. The top is quite heavy to move.
