N28; Lower Coping Stone – This stone was taken from the western most crenel on the north side of the parapet where it supported the final two merlons. W1; Partial Upper Coping Stone Return – This stone was removed from the south corner of the parapet’s west side. It stood as one of the highest points of the tower on top of Blind Tracery Upper Course Stones. W45; Lower Course Stone, Blind Tracery – Taken from the west side of the parapet from the outside of the stairwell. Two weathered quatrefoil designs are clearly visible in the blind tracery arches. No Number Identity; Mullion Stone – It is impossible to know from where on the Central Tower this stone was retrieved. This stone would have made up part of a mullion pillar. These can be seen quite clearly from the ground as the shafts all over the parapet. The distinctive cross shape on the stone would have been filled with lead to fix the stone in its place. S7c & S7d; Set of 2 Upper Coping Stone Quarters – This pair of stones were cut from the coping stone taken from the final merlon on the southern side of the parapet. Their distinct dark shading is the result of years of exposure to polluted air and rain. The rough marks and indents on the sides of the stone show where the stone was exposed and connected to the corner of the tower. Lot 55

N14; Unfinished Upper Course Stone, Open Tracery – This stone was intended for N14 on the north side of the tower but was never used. During the initial carving process, before the stone could be decorated with tracery, a clay deposit was uncovered within the stone that left a hole on the back of the right ‘leg’. Unfortunately this left the stone structurally unfit to sit atop the tower but is otherwise a sturdy, well designed piece. No Number Identity; Mullion Stone – This stone would have made up part of a mullion pillar. These can be seen quite clearly from the ground as the shafts all over the parapet. The distinctive cross shape on the stone would have been filled with lead to fix the stone in its place. The sides of this mullion have been darkened by years of weathering yet remain relatively smooth. The Phase 2 diagram illustrates the location of a mullion stone.
