A historically important letter dated April 20th 1746 written by William Chaloner of Gisborough and addressed to "Mr Mills, Attorney at law at Leeke in Staffordshire". On the left side of the cover it states that delivery is "By Stone Bag" Black wax seal with impressed crest and North Allerton (in block capitals) postmark to verso. Stone is an old market town in Staffordshire and was an important stopping off point for stagecoaches. The letter was written 4 days after the Battle of Culloden which was the final confrontation of the Jacobite uprising of 1745 and part of a religious civil war in Britain. On 16th April 1746, the Jacobite forces of Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) were decisively defeated by loyalist troops commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. The conflict was the last pitched battle fought on British soil. The letter refers to rebel troop movements, that they are demoralised and short of food and 'that they will not dare fight against that devillish man called Cumberland'. It states that 'the two armies were last Monday within eight miles of each other and a battle must be, provided they will stand'.There is also reference to the capture of 'The Hazard' a sloop of war, which was carrying 12,500 English Guineas. This is well documented in reference books of the time.
