Wooden base. The base is damaged and has marks of use.Measurements: 22,5 x 30 x 5 cm; 4,5 x 40 x 14,5 cm (base).Son of the goldsmith Carl Hagenauer, Karl studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna, where he was taught by Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad and imbued with the spirit of the Wiener Wekstätte. Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778)Veduta del prospetto principale della Colonna Trajana; Veduta del prospetto principale della Colonna Antonina (Wilton-Ely 687,708; Ficacci 703,724) Two large engravings, 1774-79, each on six joined sheets of laid paper, framedTrajana sheet 2878 x 475mm. (113 3/8 x 18 3/4in.);Antonina sheet 2607 x 470mm. 102 5/8 x 18 1/2in.) (2)Footnotes:Piranesi arrived in Rome in 1740 and after studying etching and engraving with Giuseppe Vasi and Carlo Zucchi, he became one of the most sought-after artists to commission for views of the city. As the son of a stone mason and as a trained architect himself, Piranesi was in an excellent position to appreciate and convey the majesty of these columns. These two imposing plates were produced for the series Trofeo o sia Magnifica Colonna Coclide, depicting the colossal relief columns of Rome: the columns of Trajan, Antonine (of Marcus Aurelius) and Antoninus and Faustina.Trajan's Column is the last remaining intact monument in the Trajan Forum in Rome, completed in 113 AD. It is celebrated for its spiral bas-relief sculptures which commemorate the emperor's victory in the Dacian Wars (Romania). After his death, Trajan's ashes were interred in the pedestal. There was originally a statue of Trajan on top but this was replaced by a statue of St Peter. The Antonine Column was commissioned by Marcus Aurelius's son Commodus to commemorate his father's triumph over the Germanic Marcomanni tribe in 176 AD and has a similar bas-relief decoration. It was erected in the Piazza Colonna in 193 AD and was originally topped with a statue of Marcus Aurelius, which was replaced with a statue of St Paul. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Grand triptyque présentant des poissons fossiles Large Triptych Fossil Fish MuralDiplomystus dentatus, Knightia eocaena, Priscacara serrata, Mioplosus labracoides Lower Eocene (48 Ma)Green River Formation, Wyoming, USAThe Green River Formation, in Utah and Wyoming, is one of the most important fossil sites for understanding the Eocene epoch that began about 55 million years ago. Today it is one of the most abundant and well-preserved sources of freshwater fossils in the world, producing some 19 genera of fish. The present offering was quarried from a rare, dark limestone exclusive to the particular private quarry from which this specimen originates. This dark limestone, found at the bottom of the '18-inch layer' (part of the capping layers), is a harder and more compact limestone so the fossils tend to be more dimensional and better preserved. The three separate fossil fish murals which form the triptych contain a variety of large and small fossils. They include: five Diplomystus dentatus in sizes up to 42 cm; a 32 cm Mioplosus labracoides; three Priscacara serrata in sizes up to 20 cm; and ten Knightia eocaena, in sizes up to 16.5 cm. The stone contains other trace fossils. The stone slabs have been affixed to a wood backing, with finished and beveled edges. Each of the three sections has a two-part aluminum, French cleat on the back for ease of hanging. Each panel weighing 68 lbs. Each panel measuring 120 x 60 cm. Dimensions totales :120 x 181 x 3.5 cm(3) This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a reduced rate of 5.5% on the hammer price and the prevailing rate on buyer's premium if the item remains in EU. Lot 27

Plaque fossile présentant une raie et des poissons Fossil Stingray with FishHeliobatus radians Lower EoceneGreen River Formation, Wyoming, USAA superbly prepared example of a highly rare fossil from one of the premier localities in the world, with a wingspan measuring 21.5 cm across, and 38 cm from tip to tail on an irregularly shaped natural limestone matrix. The preservation is excellent as evidenced by the presence of the many delicate wing bones and tiny vertebrae. Even one of the stingers is present towards the tip of the tail. Also present are two Knightia species as well as a 12.7 cm Diplomystus dentatus. The stone is from the '18-inch' layer of the Green River Formation and it contains unique textures and colors. The bright orange color is natural and is caused by iron oxides in the stone. Stingrays are among the rarest species to be found in the Green River Formation in Wyoming. They are a cartilaginous fish, a characteristic highly antipathetic to fossilization. The 'wings' of the ray present one of the greatest challenges to the excavator, having the thickness of only two sheets of paper. The preparator's skill is likewise keenly tested in its presentation, and the fine detail of the present example is testament to his years of experience. The fossil plaque has a two-part aluminum French cleat mounted on the verso for ease of hanging. 87 x 63.5 x 3 cm This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a reduced rate of 5.5% on the hammer price and the prevailing rate on buyer's premium if the item remains in EU.
