A WHITE AND EMERALD-GREEN JADEITE 'PHOENIX' TABLE SCREEN, CHINA, 19TH CENTURYOf rectangular form, carved in low relief to one side with a phoenix standing on a rocky outpost beside a towering tree, the other with a river landscape with some villagers on the coast as a fisherman makes his way to the shore, the calm scenery detailed with pine and willow trees, imposing rockwork, and a modest bridge. The translucent stone of white, pale gray and emerald-green hue with distinct icy inclusions. The fitted hardwood stand carved in openwork with scrolling foliage.Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Wou Kiuan. Wou Lien-Pai Museum, coll. no. Q.2.1. Dr. Wou Kiuan (1910-1997) was a Chinese diplomat and noted scholar of Chinese art. His father, Wou Lien-Pai (1873-1944), was one the leading political figures of early 20th century China, remembered for his role as speaker and leader of parliament during the turbulent years of the Republican era. Dr. Wou himself embarked on an illustrious career in diplomacy until his retirement in 1952, when he settled in London and devoted the rest of his life to the study of Chinese art. It was no doubt fortuitous that Dr. Wou's years of collecting coincided with an abundant availability of exceptional Chinese art on the London market. From the mid-1950s to the late 1960s he was able to form a collection of well over 1,000 works that together represented virtually every category of Chinese art. At the heart of Dr. Wou's drive to collect was a burning desire to preserve the relics of China's rich historical past scattered across Europe, and to promote Chinese art and culture. It is unclear when Dr. Wou conceived of the idea to create a place to house his collection, but in 1968 he opened the doors to the Wou Lien-Pai Museum, named in honor of his father. Over the years the Museum became a 'must see' destination for collectors, academics, and visiting dignitaries, and Dr. Wou would delight in leading his visitors through the galleries, recounting stories of China's glorious history.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing irregularities, light scratches, and tiny nicks.Dimensions: Size 18.3 x 10.2 cm (excl. stand) and 24.5 x 11.4 cm (incl. stand)Weight: 406.8 g (excl. stand) and 459 g (incl. stand) Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's Paris, 10 December 2019, lot 108Price: EUR 12,500 or approx. A WHITE JADE 'BUTTERFLY' SNUFF BOTTLE, POSSIBLY IMPERIAL, 18TH CENTURYChina. Well hollowed, the flattened globular body supported on a flat oval foot and rising to a short waisted neck with a straight lip. Finely carved on either side in relief with a strictly formalized design showing a pair of confronted butterflies, their antennas interlocked and resplendent wings spread out, a style typical of the workshops in Suzhou. The smoothly polished and translucent stone of a fine white tone with very few icy inclusions. Good polish overall, rendering an unctuous feel.Provenance: The VWS Collection, acquired by the previous owner's father (1890-1977) in China during the 1930s and thence by descent within the family. The VWS collection tells the extraordinary story of a family fleeing the Tsarist Empire in Russia. Their journey began in 1903 as the Chinese Eastern Railway, the eastern branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway, was completed. Fleeing, like others, a climate of political persecution and anti-Semitism, the family settled in Harbin, the most northerly city in China and started to develop its businesses from 1906 onwards. Like many others, they were attracted to this cosmopolitan place, then a major economic and cultural center in Manchuria, because of its large Jewish community. In Harbin, the father, a cultured, open-minded and multilingual man, felt at home and his early successes in business earned him respect. By 1932, he and his family were forced to flee again, following the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, and found a new home in Shanghai. From there, his businesses took him to Hong Kong, North America, and other Asian countries, where the family would remain for many years. They began collecting art in China during the 1930s and these artworks have remained with the family heirs ever since.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and minuscule nibbling.Butterflies are a popular motif in China for their highly auspicious meaning, representing the wish for 'accumulation of blessings' (fudie). Designs with pairs of butterflies suggest the duplication of an auspicious wish, since the character for butterfly (die) is a homophone for 'repeat' (die). It also a homophone with 'die' meaning 'over seventy or eighty years of age', and thus expresses a wish for longevity. Butterflies also symbolize happiness in marriage and everlasting romantic love. The latter interpretation is due to a number of traditional Chinese stories in which butterflies play a significant part. Feng Menglong (1574-1646), for example, narrates the popular story of the 'butterfly lovers' Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, who are transformed into butterflies after death. The philosopher Zhuangzi's famous dream of being a butterfly also made them symbols of the boundary between dream and reality.Stopper: Carnelian with gilt-metal collarWeight: 51.3 g Dimensions: Height including stopper 63 mm. His wide knowledge of the subject has enabled him to produce numerous publications and articles, such as his series Chinese Snuff Bottles I to XVI (1987-2011).Condition: The bottle with minor old wear, minuscule nibbles here and there, and expected natural inclusions, flaws and fissures, some of which may have developed into hairline cracks over time. The backside with a small blemish to the center, probably also a result of natural cracks which have expanded over centuries of usage. Please do thoroughly inspect all images available at www.zacke.at to see the condition details of this fine bottle.Stopper: Stained organic materialWeight: 98.2 gDimensions: Height including stopper 80 mm. Diameter neck 22 mm and mouth 8 mm.Ye Zhongsan, from about 1904 onwards, began to take advantage of what we may presume to have been a weakening market for old snuff bottles in the wake of the gradually dying interest in snuff in favor of smoking cigarettes and the political turmoil that attended the aftermath of the Boxer Rebellion of 1899-1901 and the collapse of the Qing dynasty, which would follow in 1911. We suddenly see a reasonable number of old agate and crystal bottles where the natural color shades in the material are imaginatively used as the basis for ink-play paintings. It is quite remarkable that it took until the turn of the century for any inside-painting artists to realize the potential in using such materials that were, after all, readily available and, it would seem, crying out for such treatment. It was Ye Zhongsan's use from the early years of the last century onwards that defined this particular branch of the art, and it remained his prerogative throughout his career, being adopted only occasionally by other artists, including Zhou Leyuan. This again seems strange, since once the idea was established, we might have expected other artists to respond more enthusiastically to it. But of course such initial enthusiasm may well have been impeded by the increased challenge of integrating one's personal artwork into an already existing natural and carved environment.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's Paris, 22 June 2017, lot 164 Price: EUR 7,250 or approx. A SPINACH-GREEN JADE GUI-FORM CENSER AND COVER, QIANLONG PERIODChina, 1736-1795. Superbly carved with deep rounded sides raised on a flared foot, flanked by two wide upright S-shaped loop handles, the domed cover surmounted by an intricately carved and pierced finial in the form of a ferocious dragon, above a central aperture to the interior of the cover. Finely carved around the exterior of the bowl and cover with archaistic taotie mask designs interspersed by cross-hatched lozenges, C- and S-scrolls, and an angular scroll, the foot encircled by a band of ruyi heads. The translucent stone is of a deep spinach-green color with dark specks, russet veins, and cloudy inclusions.Provenance: Robin and Fay Marx, Weybridge, Surrey, United Kingdom, acquired before 1954 and thence by descent in the family. Copies of four old insurance valuations from John Sparks Ltd., each confirming the dating above, accompany this lot. The fourth and last valuation is dated 28 January 1965, signed by Peter Vaughan (Director of John Sparks Ltd.), and states a value for the present lot (no. 29) of GBP 2,000 or approx. EUR 60,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). Robin Marx (1923-1975) was a merchant banker with an erudite passion for Chinese jades. By the early 1950s, he had built an impressive collection with the help and guidance of celebrated London dealer Peter Sparks of John Sparks Ltd. Robin was a distant relative of the influential economist Karl Marx. He bequeathed a significant part of his library to the British Museum, a fellow employee of his was Ian Fleming, and he regularly shared a box at the races with Princess Margaret. For decades after Robin's death, his wife Fay kept his collection on loving display in the family home. A part of the collection was sold by Christie's on 16 December 2022 after Fay's passing in 2021, including two pieces which were also included in the John Sparks insurance valuations: A spinach-green jade brushpot, Qianlong period, initially valued at GBP 250 (no. 8) and sold by Christie's for EUR 56,700, and lot 137, a 'dragon' jar and cover, Jiajing mark and period, initially valued at GBP 375 (no. 37) and sold by Christie's for EUR 94,500, lot 132. Condition: Good condition with minor wear and minuscule nibbling. The jade with natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks.Weight: 1,134 g Dimensions: Width 24.3 cm Expert's note: This censer is notable for its bold, well-proportioned form as well as its exquisitely carved archaistic taotie mask decorations and magnificent, pierced, coiled dragon-form finial. During the eighteenth century, some of the finest jade carvings found their inspiration in archaic artifacts collected and treasured by the emperors. The decorative motifs on the body of the present censer draw inspiration from archaic bronze vessels. Roger Keverne explains in his 1991 publication, Jade, pp. 164, that spinach-green incense burners of this type were found in the Imperial palace.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 21 March 2019, lot 1110 Price: USD 555,000 or approx. A SPINACH-GREEN JADE 'SEVEN SAGES OF THE BAMBOO GROVE' (ZHULIN QIXIAN) BRUSHPOT, BITONG, QIANLONG PERIODExpert's note: The present brushpot is extraordinary in how the master carver transformed the vessel into a three-dimensional multi-layered canvas, with the image continuing and revealing itself through the physical turning of the vessel by the beholder. It is also noteworthy that to produce such a magnificent vessel, a very large jade boulder of remarkable quality would have been used, with the carving process and hollowing of the brushpot creating significant wastage of material, underscoring the lavish expenditure in the process of making this exceptional scholarly vessel.China, 1736-1795. Of cylindrical form, raised on three short ogee-bracket feet. Deftly carved in deep relief with a continuous scene of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove engaged in various pursuits and accompanied by their boy attendants in the eponymous bamboo grove amid craggy rockwork, towering pines, and swirling clouds. The partially translucent stone is of a dark spinach-green hue with expected icy inclusions and dark spots.Provenance: Collection of Roger Meffreys, and thence by descent in the same family. A private collection in France, acquired from the above. Roger Meffreys (1899-1976) was a French diplomat who served in China between 1936 and 1946. His first position in Shanghai was General Consul, later being assigned the position of Ambassador for France in Beijing until 1946. Meffreys became enamored with Chinese culture and works of art, frequently visiting Beijing's antique shops and meeting famous artists including Xu Beihong. He built an exceptional collection, which he then took with him after his appointment as Ambassador ended. Meffreys continued in various diplomatic positions in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand, before retiring in his hometown of Grenoble.Condition: Very good condition with natural wear, traces of use, two small chips around one foot, possibly with an associated minuscule repair. The stone with natural inclusions and fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks.Weight: 1,897.7 g Dimensions: Height 16.1 cm, Diameter 13.4 cm Two of the sages are playing a game of weiqi (go), with one of them reaching into the container (weiqizhe) by his side for a counter, as a third looks on, while the four other sages are gathered around a table as one of them writes a poem on a scroll. One of the attendants is climbing a bamboo stalk, while another is fanning a kettle, preparing tea for the group. The 'Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove' were mid-3rd century literati who had renounced their official status and careers, retreating to the countryside in protest against the corrupt politics of the Wei dynasty rulers. They advocated freedom of individual beliefs which were inspired by Daoist philosophy. The design of the 'Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove' (zhulin qixian) especially appealed to the Qianlong Emperor's wish to depict himself as an upright ruler and his desire to be seen as a man of letters. The seven sages, depicted gathered under a bamboo grove drinking, composing poetry, and enjoying each other's company, came to represent scholars disenchanted with official policies and are symbols of an incorruptible personality. They reflect the virtues of art and intellectual pursuits.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related spinach-green jade brushpot, 14 cm high, also dated to the Qianlong period, exhibited by the Oriental Ceramic Society at Bonhams London, Reginald and Lena Palmer, their Collection, and the Oriental Ceramic Society, 1921-1970, 27 October 2021. Their journey began in 1903 as the Chinese Eastern Railway, the eastern branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway, was completed. Fleeing, like others, a climate of political persecution and anti-Semitism, the family settled in Harbin, the northernmost city in China and started to develop its businesses from 1906 onwards. Overall displaying very well.Weight: 7,351 g and 7,203 g Dimensions: Height 56.1 cm and 56 cm The inscription is an excerpt from the story of Zhuo Wenjun recorded in Baimei Xinyong Tuchuan ('Poems and Paintings of One Hundred Beauties'). She lived during the Western Han dynasty and was the wife of Sima Xiangru, a prominent writer and musician. As the poem tells, Zhuo Wenjun's husband decided to take a concubine after finding favor in the eyes of emperor Wu, which lead Zhuo Wenjun to write Bai Tou Yin ('White Head Song'). Sima Xiangru was shamed by her poem and promptly abandoned his desire to take a concubine. However, he never forgave Zhuo Wenjun and later attempted to divorce her, to which Zhuo Wenjun replies in a second poem, 'I only hope that in the next life you will come as a woman and I will come as a man!'Baimei Xinyong Tuzhuan is a book of woodblock prints illustrating stories written by Yan Xiyuan, an author who lived during the Qing Dynasty. It is composed of four volumes and contains drawings by the great painter Wang Hui. A FLAMBE GLAZED 'OLIVE-STONE' VASE, GANLANPING, LATE QING DYNASTY TO REPUBLIC PERIODChina, c. 1850-1950. The vase is well potted with an elegant rounded body tapering towards the slightly spreading foot and towards the waisted neck that rises to a flared rim, covered overall in a thick, finely crackled, streaked glaze of a crushed strawberry tone with distinct bluish lavender splashes thinning to mushroom at the rim.Provenance: French trade. Condition: Good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, including glaze recesses, open bubbles, and pitting. Chips to the foot, minor glaze flaking, the foot smoothened in some areas, probably inherent to manufacturing, due to the uneven glaze dripping along the rim which is expected from this type of ware. Weight: 1,676 gDimensions: Height 31.8 cm Literature comparison: Vases of this unusual shape are rather rare. The form itself, known as ganlanping or 'olive-stone', was much admired in all three of the great Imperial reigns of the Qing dynasty - Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong. During the Kangxi period the shape was more attenuated, as exemplified by a pale-blue-glazed vase illustrated by John Ayers, The Baur Collection, vol. 3, Geneva, 1972, no. A 328, which has a tall slender neck rising to a slightly everted mouth rim. The somewhat more robust shape seen in the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods has a shorter neck and more widely flared mouth, as well as a slight flare at the foot. Such Yongzheng-marked vases include a blue and white example in the Palace Collection, Beijing, illustrated in Qingdai Yuyao ciqi, vol. 1, Beijing 2005, pp. 80-1, no. 29, and another with a copper-red glaze illustrated ibid., pp. 38-39, no. 9, which is almost the same height as our example.

A MARBLE STELE FRAGMENT OF THE BUDDHA, EASTERN WEI DYNASTYChina, 532-546 AD. The finely carved fragment depicts the Buddha, with his serene face, heavy lidded eyes, and calm smile, in repose backed by a tear-drop mandorla. His robes are smooth, draping off his shoulders to naturalistically expose his chest. His head with a round ushnisha, worn through centuries of worhip.Provenance: From a private collection in Brescia, Italy.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. The marble has been smoothened through extensive weathering and worship, with soil remnants likely from a prolonged period of burial, cracks and losses, all of which only add to the exceptionally breathtaking appearance of this little gem.Weight: 517.1 gDimensions: Height 11.5 cm With an associated metal stand. (2)Steles played an important role in the development of religious art in China. During the Northern Wei dynasty, state-sponsorship of Buddhism enabled the rapid spread of the religion throughout northern China. At this time, Buddhist voluntary groups affiliated to local temples and organized by laymen became the main patrons of Buddhist steles which commemorated the group's religious, social, and territorial identity. The relative ubiquity of the medium employed to manufacture steles, and their small size, prompted a multitude of regional workshops, many of which developed their own style using the monumental cave temple carvings as a basis.Literature comparison:Compare a related stele with the buddha, 3.2 m high, from the Shanxi province and dated to the Northern Wei dynasty, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 65.29.3, published by Denise Leidy and Donna Strahan in Wisdom Embodied: Chinese Buddhist and Daoist Sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2011. A LIMESTONE FIGURE OF A TWO-HORNED MYTHICAL BEAST, GAZING AT THE MOON, TANG DYNASTYExpert's note: The pose of this mythical beast reflects depictions of recumbent xiniu and indicates that the present design may have served as a prototype for later depictions of this subject. The design of a xiniu gazing at the moon gained popularity in the Song dynasty and through the 13th and 14th centuries, appearing on Dingyao and Yaozhou bowls and dishes as well as textiles and elsewhere in Chinese decorative arts. The theme is discussed at length by Jan Wirgin, in “Sung Ceramic Designs," B.M.F.E.A., No. 42, Stockholm, 1970, pp. 196-198. According to Wirgin, the term hsi-niu (xiniu) meant rhinoceros in ancient Chinese texts, but the rhinoceros became extinct in the post-archaic period, and by the Song dynasty the xiniu had become a beast of legend, known only through literary references. The design of a xiniu gazing at the moon illustrates the popular myth that the unique crescent-shaped horns of the rhinoceros enable the beast to magically “communicate with the sky". The powers attributed to the horns of the rhinoceros in the Song dynasty continued to gain in complexity and popularity in later periods.China, 618-907. Resting on a massive rectangular base, the mythical beast strongly resembles a two-horned xiniu gazing at the moon and sits recumbent with its head turned back towards its haunches. The creature has its tail tucked underneath it, visibly resting atop its right-back leg. Breathing out the wind, the curling whisps surround a moon-like disk above the beast's abdomen. The wrinkled brow of the beast animates its wide-open eyes as it strains to breathe out. The stone contains natural veins of a light-red hue.Provenance: From the collection of Bo Ive (1922-1981), Denmark, and thence by descent within the same family.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. They are an important part of the cultural heritage of Nepal and can be found in many different styles and designs throughout the country. These struts are found in traditional Nepalese architecture, particularly in religious structures such as temples and shrines, ornately carved and often painted, serving both structural and symbolic purposes.Structurally, the struts help support the roof of the temple or shrine, which is made of heavy timber or stone. The struts are typically placed at regular intervals along the eaves of the roof, and their weight helps to counterbalance the weight of the roof, making the structure more stable.Symbolically, the struts are often carved with intricate designs and figures from Nepalese mythology and are believed to have religious significance. They are thought to represent various deities or supernatural beings and are intended to offer protection and blessings to the structure and its occupants.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 20 March 2002, lot 57 Price: USD 25,850 or approx. A SILVER-MOUNTED 'CITIPATI' KAPALA WITH CORAL AND TURQUOISE CABOCHONS, TIBET, 18TH-19TH CENTURYThe smoothly polished skull cup is fitted with a silver lining to the interior, the exterior rim with a band of repousse citipati skulls in high relief, the front and back each with three cabochons, a turquoise stone flanked by two coral gems. The scull bone preserves the bregma and sagittal sutures and shows a fine, natural patina overall.Provenance: French trade. Condition: Good condition with old wear, manufacturing irregularities, and natural imperfections. Small dents, tiny scratches. One of the cabochons is an old replacement made of glass.Weight: 411.6 g Dimensions: Length 18.5 cm A kapala (Sanskrit for "skull") is a skull cup used as a ritual implement in both Hindu and Buddhist Tantra. Especially in Tibet, they are often carved or elaborately mounted with precious metals and jewels. 'Scented' skull cups are seen in the hands of many wrathful deities. During tantric meditations these skull cups are filled with an alcoholic ritual substance visualized by monks as containing five corpses and five bodily excretions. The meditation transforms this into ambrosia, parallel to the transformation of the five delusions into the five wisdoms, and the five poisons into the five Tathagathas.Expert's note: Memento mori (Latin for 'remember that you will die') is an artistic and symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death. Altogether sobering, and in some sense comforting, it's an epitaph for the masses - commoners and kings alike. Such art, which already appeared in ancient cultures, is also associated with festivals in remembrance and honor of the deceased, as held by many peoples throughout the world. These include the Mexican Day of the Dead and several Tibetan festivals where the dance of the Citipati is performed.Literature comparison:Compare a related kapala with a brass lining and similar coral and turquoise cabochons, 28.2 cm long, dated ca. 19th century, in the British Museum, registration number 1931,1124.1.a.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Bonhams New York, 18 September 2013, lot 46 Price: USD 4,375 or approx. A PARCEL-GILT SCHIST HEAD OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, KUSHAN PERIODExpert's note: While it is reasonable to assume that many schist figures were originally polychromed, or in some cases gilt, following Greco-Roman prototypes, only very few examples remain. In the present example, the Buddha head retains much of its original gilding. Compare a closely related parcel-gilt and polychromed schist figure of the Buddha, 51 cm high, at Christie's New York, 12 September 2012, lot 522. Much like the Buddha in this example, the present lot was never part of a free-standing statue, but rather is a fragment of a large and prominent temple relief, as becomes obvious when viewing the backside. It also shows close stylistic affinities with early stucco productions from Gandharan sites at Taxila. The sensitive modeling has an expressive quality that is not seen often in the more formal stone images from this period.Ancient region of Gandhara, 2nd-4th century. Superbly carved, the serene face with heavy-lidded almond-shaped eyes, below elegantly arched brows, centered by a raised circular urna. The pronounced aquiline nose above full bow-shaped lips, the hair arranged in long wavy locks over the ushnisha.Provenance: From an old Belgian private collection. Acquired before 1970 and thence by descent in the family. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, some weathering and erosion, obvious losses, encrustations. They also appear on the door lintels of many temples in northern India as a means of protecting the shrine and its visitors from maleficent portents and beings. The role and importance of the Navagraha developed over time with various influences. Deifying planetary bodies and their astrological significance occurred as early as the Vedic period and was recorded in the Vedas. The earliest work of astrology recorded in India is the Vedanga Jyotisha which began to be compiled in the 14th century BCE. It was possibly based on works from the Indus Valley Civilization as well as various foreign influences. Babylonian astrology was the first astrology and calendar to develop and was adopted by multiple civilizations including India.Literature comparison:Compare the closely related Navagraha relief from Bihar in the same style, dated ca. 950-1000 AD, in the San Diego Museum of Art, accession number 2007.173. He intuits that bronze and stone sculpture, as opposed to wood, must have begun in Kerala under the political hegemony of the Pallava dynasty, which ended in the 9th century.
