The Monte Cassino Bell'. The Bell and the accompanying framed 'letter' have been displayed in the Bell at Boxford public house for decades. Following the retirement of the publican, the entire contents were cleared. The letter reads as follows; "This Bell was recovered during the aftermath of the fierce battles of Monte Cassino in May 1944. It was carried throughout the Allied offensives in Italy and at the end of the war came to England. It has been kindly loaned to the Bell at Boxford by Mr F Dixon who served with the Parachute Regiment during the Italian campaign. After the Allied landings in Salerno in September 1943 the Axis Forces withdrew to a fortified line, one of the most vital points being the hilltop Monastery complex known as Monte Cassino. The monastery itself contained many priceless religious treasures as well as being itself an ancient historic site. In December 1943 the Allies assaulted the position but were repulsed by well sited Axis troops mainly from formations of Panzer Grenadiers and Para troops. Allied attacks continued into the new year without success even after the position had been outflank by further landings behind the front at Anzio-Nettuno. Attempt to pound the defenders into submission with tactical and strategic air forces or to dislodge them with artillery met with failure. The monastery complex was reduced to rubble, aiding the Axis infantry enormously, each stone became a fiercely contested strongpoint which could only be taken after the most bitter hand to hand fighting. Eventually in May 1944, after continuous and costly fighting, the summit was captured by Free French colonial mountain troops and units of the Polish Free Army. The loss of the Monte Cassino position forced the Axis armies to withdraw along with the whole front and paved the way to the end of the Second World War in Italy. This Monte Cassino Bell is a permanent reminder of one of the most controversial battles of that war." The Bell was recovered from the Bell at Boxford following the retirement of the publican. The Para troop Regiment has been contacted and they have no formal record of the Bell being returned to England. The only provenance the auctioneers have is the letter accompanying the Bell. Whilst there is no one who can collaborate the story, the Auctioneers have no reason to doubt the authenticity.
*Anita Mandl (Czech-British, b.1926),'Penguin with Egg', unsigned, polyphnat stone, 21cm high together with 'Certificate of Authenticity in the form approved by the Royal Society of British Sculptors, dated 16th June 1980.Anita Mandl was born in Prague and came to England in 1939. On leaving school she trained as a zoologist at Birkbeck College, University of London, gaining a first class honours degree in 1947. In 1965, she married and moved to Devon where she set up a sculpture studio in her garden. Most of Mandl’s sculptures are simplified animal forms with highly polished surfaces where detail is eliminated in order to set off the natural beauty of each subject’s material. Mandl’s early carvings were mostly in hardwoods, but later she turned to alabaster, soapstone and marble, and for some time experimented with two-tone effects and polished areas with chiselled or scratched finishes or inlaid resins. Mandl’s sculptures share a superficial resemblance to the Inuit carvings of North America and Asia.*Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.Condition report: Some small chips to the underside - pads stuck to the underside - the beak appears OK - a small craze or crack appears to be there.
