Highly unusual set of six late 18th / early 19th century Neo-classical circular cameo wall plaques in the manner of Wedgwood, each roundel with Herculaneum bas-relief, with white and plum slip ornamant, unsigned, 28.5cm diameter in giltwood framesProvenance: Purchased from Thorpe and Foster, Bond Street, London 1971 for £1,250, described when sold as 'set of Code stone plaques circa 1810'. These appear to be related to plaques produced by Wedgwood from a set of 14 plaster reliefs taken from Classical Herculaneum subjects, owned by the 1st Marquess of Landsdowne (1737-1805). Wedgwood intended the plaques to be used in interiors by Robert Adams and others. The British Museum hold an example 'Polyphemus and Cupid on a dolphin (same as the subject in the present group) in white terracotta stoneware, black basalt examples of the group of subjects are also known.

A fine 18ct yellow gold and diamond solitaire ring, the 2.27ct old brilliant cut diamond of fine clarity, I/VVS1, over tapered shoulders, size N.* Condition: This ring is in very good condition overall. The stone itself is in fine condition and exceptionally clean. It is nice and lively. There is just one minute flaw at the girdle - it's appears to be a miniscule frit to the edge of the girdle. It is absolutely minute and certainly cannot be seen with the naked eye - only through a 10x lens or felt very carefully with the tip of a fingernail. The setting and shank are in very good condition, with just minor scratching from wear. There are no sizing marks and it is hallmarked '18CT'.
A 6.5ct cushion cut loose tanzanite stone, with deep violet blue colour and accompanied by an International Gemological Institute certificate.* Condition: Sealed inside the capsule. There are a number of miniscule frits (approx. 10) visible to the facet edges to the table and girdle, when viewed through a 10x lens.
A 5.87ct loose tanzanite stone, the stone itself triangle mixed cut and with a deep violet blue colour. Accompanied by a full International Gemological Institute certificate.* Condition: Sealed inside the capsule. There are tiny frits visible to the three main facet edges to the underside. There is a crystal line inclusion to the stone near the tip of one point
A 17.21ct loose tanzanite stone, the stone itself a cushion cut, in a vibrant and deep blue with excellent depth of colour. Accompanied by full International Gemological Institute certificate.* Condition: 15 x 12.5 x 10mm. There are no inclusions visible at all with a lens. There are two minute frits to the edge of the table. Lovely stone.
A 3.42ct cushion mixed cut tanzanite, accompanied by a certificate from the Canadian Gemological & Jewellery Laboratories.* Condition: 10.25 x 8 x 4mm. The stone has been cut slightly deeper at one end than the other – see photos. There are no inclusions visible with a 10x lens. There are two minute frits to the centre cut to the underside.
An 18ct yellow gold and moonstone ring, featuring a large cabochon moonstone held between 8 yellow gold prongs. Ring size N.* Condition: The top of the stone is quite heavily worn with scratches and tiny surface nicks throughout. There are also three miniscule frits at the bottom edge of the stone. The claws are secure and the stone does not move in its setting. The shank has expected wear but is good overall. Hallmarked '18CT' but possibly sized as there is a partial London leopard's head mark but no other hallmarks visible - probably the 18ct mark was added to replace the earlier marks when sized.
An 18ct yellow gold and diamond four stone ring, made by N. St. J. Paint & Son, Guernsey, the four brilliant cut diamonds totalling approx. 1.5ct, of very good clarity and colour, ring size M½.* Condition: This ring is in very good condition overall. The stones are in VG condition, with no chips or scratches - they're nice and white (G-H) and are VS1 - clean with just a few tiny inclusions and one with a tiny carbon spot, which are only visible through a 10x lens and are all towards the edges of the stones. Nice and lively overall. The setting and shank are in good condition with just minor wear as would be expected and a few small but deeper scratches/nicks to the gold at the outside bottom of the shank. Claws are all secure. Clear hallmarks.
An antique diamond and sapphire plaque ring, featuring an inky blue cabochon sapphire to the centre, surrounded by an oval plaque inlaid with round, brilliant cut diamonds. Ring size J.Condition report: The sapphire measures 11 x 6.5mm. approx. The top of the sapphire has some miniscule pits and tiny scratches to the surface – these are visible to the naked eye as a very slight ‘matting’ to the shine on the top of the cabochon. There is also one larger (approx. 1.5mm) old surface scratch to the sapphire just off the top to one side – it is not particularly deep and is old so the edges are worn, but it can just about be felt with a fingernail. With a light shone from underneath the stone, some clear natural dark & light contrasting striations can be seen low down on one side just above the setting, along with a patch of silvery inclusions – this patch of inclusions are also visible from underneath with a light shone through the top of the stone. When worn, these inclusions are not visible. The diamonds all appear to be original – one of the larger side ones at one end has a small chip to the girdle (which is beneath a claw and was therefore presumably caused pre-mounting). That same stone also has two small chips to the edge of the table – one is very sharp and may in fact be an inaccurate cut from during the cutting. Our approximation is that the diamonds weigh approx. 0.5ct total. The millegrain setting is in good condition, with some wear as expected at either end. On the shoulders, one of the central ‘leaf’ pieces stretching from the millegrain edge to the shoulder has been off and has been reattached with tiny spots of clear glue). It seems secure but obviously it would be preferable to have a soldered repair. The shank does not appear to have been sized. There are no hallmarks. The metal tests as platinum of an electronic tester. We believe that the ring dates from the 1930s.
A fine Georgian 18ct yellow gold fancy guard chain, Circa 1820, a 9mm round belcher style link, all individually stamped with a diamond patten; the clasp in the form of a hand with the cuff set with a small oval faceted ruby and the forefinger set with a small round faceted emerald. With original fitted case. Overall 1240mm. Gross weight 92.2g.* Condition: The guard chain is in very good condition overall. There are no splits, dents or repairs to the chain links. The hand clasp is functioning well with a crisp click into place. The emerald on the hand's 'ring' has a miniscule frit to one corner and the rub-over setting of this stone is worn to one side. However, it is secure. This really is the only fault - it is a lovely piece overall. The case is original and has some minor wear to the edges as one would expect - there is more significant wear to the morocco on the underside. The hinge has slight movement but is secure and has no splits or repairs.
A diamond solitaire ring, the round cut diamond weighing approximately 1ct and set in a 9ct yellow gold band. Ring size M.* Condition: The diamond has no chips or damage. Overall SI1, colour J-K. Very little fluorescence under UV.The stone has a small patch of cavity line inclusions near the girdle, which show on the surface and can be felt with a fingernail. There is a fine feather inclusion to the side and a small patch of mineral inclusions including tiny carbon spots in the same place. There is also a patch of cloud inclusions around one claw.
