The Goding family brewery, headed by Thomas Goding, was very successful during the nineteenth century. The site was particularly desirable as there was a waterworks nearby, which the Godings bought and incorporated into the brewery in 1853. The water used for brewing was sourced from the five wells inside the building. The brewery was taken over in 1924 by the brewers Hoare and Co., of Wapping, and was badly damaged by fire in 1931. It remained derelict until it was demolished in 1949. The Royal Festival Hall stands in its place today and the only evidence of the original brewery is the large lion visible on the top of the building, made of artificial Coade stone and is known as the South Bank Lion.
