Gill, Eric, (1882 -1940). Gill Hebrew typeface. a printed, promotional, pamphlet, 'designed by the distinguished British artist Eric Gill', Jerusalem Type Foundry, Romema, Israel, n.d. (c. 1959). a 4pp. printed pamphlet, issued by the foundry to proudly introduce a new Hebrew typeface to be called Gill Hebrew, INSCRIBED to the front page by the artist's younger brother Eric Robertson Gill, 'For Leo Levy / from / Eric R. Gill / February 1959', within original brown envelope, postmarked South Kensington, 14 Jan, 1959, and further ink stamped 'if undelivered please return to Beauchamp Bookshop, 15a Harrington Road, SW7'. Eric Gill was an English sculptor, essayist, printmaker and typeface designer associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1937, whilst living and studying in Jerusalem, he became attracted to Hebrew lettering, the Gill Hebrew font was derived from a Hebrew alphabet Gill had cut in stone, introducing unusual serifs unprecedented in the history of Hebrew lettering. Jerusalem Foundry was the first type foundry in Israel, founded in 1954 by Moshe Spitzer and Heinz van Cleef. (2)
