David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "German Invasion" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 30? Invasion of Russia 1941 stamp issued June 22, 1991. Ever the master of betrayal, Adolf Hitler turned his troops against the Soviet Union -- a former ally -- on June 22, 1941. With all the swiftness and surprise that had become a German trademark, some three million men poured across the border and cut deeply into the heart of the mighty Red Army. By the day's end, LVI Panzer Corps under General Erich von Manstein had cut one hundred miles into northern Russia while invading armies in other parts of the Soviet Union experienced similar victories. To Hitler and his generals, this first day would be a jubilant one, but the elation was short-lived. As with Napoleon I before him, Hitler's invasion of Russia would be the beginning of the end. David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "German Tanks Approaching Moscow" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Siege of Moscow 1941 stamp issued October 2, 1991. Adolf Hitler viewed Operation Barbarossa -- the invasion of Russia launched in June 1940 -- as a tremendous success. Made overconfident and enticed by the impressive early victories, Hitler on October 2, 1941 turned his armies toward Moscow. The Wehrmacht made rapid progress at the start, but in the final days of October, the rains came. Mud mired down the army. Then, when the snow began to fall, the Germans lacking winter uniforms, perished by the thousands. Finally in early November, a salient of Germans broke through to see the spires of the Kremlin rising in the distance, which would be the closest they would come to the city. The Red Army fought harder as the weather grew worse and Hitler's grand plan died in the snow along with his troops. Image Size: 16.25 x 23.75 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 26.75 in. Unframed. (B12812)

One of the United States destroyers to be transferred to Great Britain, HMS Rockingham was used for training in December 1943. Depicted here in British camouflage of light green and blue, British Royal Navy colors fly from her main mast while she drops depth charges from her stern to combat the dreaded "Sea Wolves" -- the German U-boats. After a career of fighting the enemy and helping to train the armed forces of Great Britain, the HMS Rockingham struck a mine and sank off Aberdeen, Scotland, on September 27, 1944. Dot Barlowe (American, B. 1926) "Yap: Partnership of People & Nature" Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Federated States of Micronesia Stamp Sheetlet Yap - A Partnership of People & Nature issued December 15, 1993. "The land, not the man, is chief." This Yapese adage reflects the high esteem in which the citizens of the State of Yap hold their home. Cleverly making use of the natural bounty of the tropical archipelago, the Yap people fulfill many of their basic needs by employing the resources around them. Surrounded by a natural ring of coral reef, the island state of Yap is situated in the Pacific Ocean southwest of Guam. Often called "The Land of Stone Money," Yap is noted for the large stone coins which decorate most villages. Dating as far back as 125 A.D., stone money originated from the limestone quarries of Palau, a five-day canoe trip from yap. The tradition of weaving is kept alive by the product of lavalavas -- colorful woven fabric skirts. Additional weaving included the baby basket, baskets and handbags which are created entirely from indigenous natural fibers. Another practical item fashioned from the local flora is the Bamboo Raft, know as fafat in the Yapese language. For long journeys the wooden outrigger canoe was the most popular choice. Good soil the wooden outrigger canoe was the most popular choice. Good soil and proper cultivation resulted in food such as yams, Cyrtosperma taro, mango and other tropical foods. The marine life was another valuable source of nourishment for the inhabitants of Yap. Image Size: 19 x 15 in. Overall Size: 24 x 18.75 in. Unframed. (B14551)
Howard Koslow (American, 1924 - 2016) "Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands" Original Acrylic painting on Illustration Board. Signed lower left.. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 29c Northern Mariana Islands stamp issued November 4, 1993. Situated 1,500 miles east of the Philippines and 1,400 miles southeast of Japan, lies the Pacific archipelago known as the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Comprised of 14 separate isles with white sandy beaches dotted with orange flame trees, this tropical setting is fast becoming a popular getaway for American tourists. Four of the most visited islands of the Northern Mariana group are Saipan, Tinian, Agrihan and Rota. On two of these islands, Tinian and Rota, spectacular examples of ancient latte stone architecture can be seen. Used to support the thatched homes of the Chamorro natives, rows of latte stone columns are ingeniously topped with large hemispherical capstones. Found only on the Northern Marianas and Guam, the fascinating latte stone construction is believed to have first appeared around 1180 -- a date determined by the radiocarbon dating of food processing tools located near the housing sites. Today, the Mariana Islands' latte stone remnants serve not only as tourist sites, but also as a link to an ancient culture. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 19.75 x 18 in. Unframed. (B14423)
Brian Clinton (Australian, B. 1942) "Fishing for Pleasure" Original Watercolor painting on Hot Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Australian 35c Fishing For Pleasure stamp issued October 24, 1979. Prehistoric men fished for food, and stone age men caught fish with water traps. Hundreds of years before Christ, the Chinese spun silk fish line and the Egyptians used flax to weave strong nets for the same purpose. Fishing is as old as man himself and for centuries has influenced man's way of life. Few other outdoor activities offer the same combination of grueling anticipation, bursts of sudden excitement, and periods of restful relaxation, that fishing does. In fact, the pleasures of fishing are as varied as the people who participate in the sport. Every fisherman has his own reason for fishing. Sport fishermen, for example are attracted to the excitement of hooking a real sea lunker. They use complicated equipment and topographic maps to determine where the fish are and when they will bite. Other fishermen simply enjoy the chance to escape the pressures of the workday world and bask in the quiet of a lonely cove while their simple fishing line dangles in the water. For others it is the beauty of the coastline on a lovely summer day that brings them fishing. Whatever their reason for fishing, all fishermen share an equal chance with lady luck. No one fisherman, in the centuries since man first fished, ever managed to convince her to promise special favors. The small barefoot boy fishing with a cane pole from a pier and the avid sport fisherman with expensive boat and steel rod have an equal chance. Neither knows what he will catch -- if anything.
