A 20th Century Chinese Oriental Serpentine stone ( New Jade ) obelisk of rounded octagonal form having two sections raised on a square base. The obelisk having a cylindrical hole running through the centre with further etched decoration to the exterior. Unmarked. Measures approx 17cm x 12cm diameter.
A rare antique 17th Century bezoar stone of good size held within a lacquered medical apothecary box with paper label. Likely an example from a goat. Measures approx; 5cm. A bezoar is a mass found trapped in the gastrointestinal system. Bezoars had value because they were believed to have the power of a universal antidote against any poison. Tradition held that a drinking glass which contained a bezoar would neutralize any poison poured into it. The word "bezoar" comes from the Persian pād-zahr (پادزهر), which literally means "antidote.
