{} John Roddam Spencer Stanhope (1829-1908)"Autumn"Watercolour heightened with white, 39cm by 53.5cm Exhibited: Institute of Painters in Watercolours, date unknown, no.2Victoria Art Gallery, Bath and City of Manchester Autumn Exhibition 1911Provenance: Messrs Christie, Mason & Woods, London Saturday, December 17th, 1904, "Watercolour Drawings formed by Wickham Flower Esq", lot 25Thos. Agnew & Sons, LondonThe Stone Gallery, Newcastle upon TyneCondition report: General surface dirt and minor bits of debris trapped under surface glass. Maintains good colour depth, although likely slightly tempered by time staining/oxidization to painting most evident in areas of the sky. Also, considerable foxing is evident within the sky, but not exclusively. Slight cockling to the paper. Top right-hand corner, possibly backboard showing exposing an area of text (see images). Minor areas pigment?/bloom likley trapped to the underside of glass most noticeable within the central passage of trees. This may have settled onto/progressed into the sheet itself. Possibly positioned in a property with some environmental moisture in general with resulting considerations as described. Not examined out of the frame. Johann Nepomuk Mayrhofer (1764-1832) AustrianA still life of variegated Tulips, Narcissus, Roses and Convolvulus arranged in a wicker basket on a stone ledge with butterflies feeding and in the surroundingInitialled, oil on canvas, 44cm by 36.5cmFootnote: Mayrhofer, whose work often reveals the influence of early Dutch masters such as Ambrosius Bosschaert, was highly regarded in his time for fruit and flower pieces which, according to The Dictionary of 19th Century Austrian Painters, ‘he managed to render with great realism and an extraordinary freshness in the colours thanks to his great technical skills’.Condition report: In fully restored condition, relined, cleaned and revarnished. The brown to rust coloured butterfly at the top of the arrangement is likely strengthened throughout. The dark green and shadowy leaves approx. 1/3 down of the arragnement on the left hand side have likely been strengthened as have some of the corresponding dark green silohuettes of foliage between Delphiniums and the prominent Tulip forming the finial of the display. The upper right hand side of the monogram on the horizonal has been delicately retouched. There are approx. 3 tiny retouches within the outer petals of the prominent central pink Rose laid on the stone top and within the leaf right and below of this. There is little further to discern under a UV light but it does not exclude the possiblity of further considered intervention - for example there is a subtle but slightly incongrous looking essentialy rectangular patch of darker paint at the tip of the delicate sprig on the right hand side of the decoration and detailing to denote the dark purple Tulip on the right hand side which could have also recvied a degree of restoration. A band of medium sized craquelure to centre of stone ledge which is beginning to show signs of lifting. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish.

Provenance: Pilgrims Hall, near Brentwood, Ongar Road, Essex, commissioned by JFN Lawrence, whose family lived at the property 1913-1968Thence by descent to NW LawrenceThence by descent Lesley Lewis nee Lawrence in 1991 Footnote: The artist's visit to Pilgrims Hall and the commission is recorded by the Lawrence family as follows :"Rex Whistler was pale dark-haired young man, friendly but evidently shy, sitting out on the lawn on a very cold June day making a detailed pencil drawing, subsequently squared up for transfer. He ( Rex Whistler) spent the night and was very agreeable company. Delivery of the finished painting was considerably delayed by James Lawrence, a determined man, managed to get it from him a few months later. Possibly feeling rather contrite, the artist sent him two tickets for the dress rehearsal of "Victoria Regina" a delightful show for which he designed the scenery""James Lawrence, who frequented picture galleries and bought paintings, usually watercolours, went to an exhibition of pictures of country houses by Rex Whistler, and possibly others, and gave the commission there. At that time Pilgrims Hall, on which great care and imaginative planning were exercised, was perhaps at its very best. No more improvements were made to the garden before the war, and after that much of it had to be let go. The house is now (as written 1991) externally little altered however". Condition report: General surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Slightly loose in frame. Slight stretcher shadow most notably to top edge. Transfer of paint from frame to bottom edge. Pinholes to top and bottom edges. Slight scuff to paving stone, bottom left edge. Canvas slightly uneven to left and right edges. Small light scuff to treetop right of building no more than 1cm in length. Small area of restoration to tree above end of loggia showing slightly cloudy to the naked eye. Otherwise appears sound.
