There is a slight discrepancy to the pigmentation in the sitter's face but this is very subtle and not clear whether this was the artist's intention rather than later restoration. Some very slight bowing to the ivory sheet. Girl: Some light surface dirt throughout. The miniature has slipped in the mount a little but there is no obvious bowing. There is a small white blemish to the left of the sitter's right shoulder but this looks like it might have been part of the artist's original intention. Unexamined out of glazed frame. The glaze with some surface scratching. The mount with one holding pin missing. Otherwise no significant condition issues, commensurate with age. Condition Report Disclaimer

Y English School (c.1800) A double-sided portrait miniature; the obverse with a lady, wearing white dress, her powdered hair with blue ribbon; the reverse depicting Venus and Cupid in a landscape Watercolour on ivory, oval Reverse inscribed Hope Springs Eternal In The Human Breast 6cm (2¼ in.) high In a gilt metal mount Condition Report: Lady: There is a vertical crack running the length of the right side (3.8cm). Some very light discolouration to areas of the background, together with some light surface dirt and scratching. The miniature has slipped in the frame slightly and there is a very slight hint that the ivory is starting to bow. Unexamined out of glazed frame. Hope Springs: Some discolouration to the green pigment in the trees which has now turned brown. Some of the applied detail to the forest floor has been lost at the extreme edge but this is barely noticeable. There are also traces of associated glue residue, but this will have been present since the works conception. There is no crack to this miniature, and therefore this is on a separate ivory sheet to the portrait to the obverse. The miniature has slipped in the frame slightly. Unexamined out of glazed frame. The mount with some general wear, nicks and tarnishing commensurate with age. Condition Report Disclaimer

Some light spots of white surface mould but this should be easily removed by a soft brush. Some light rubbing to the framing edge, and the lower left edge also with an area of minimal possible retouching. Light surface dirt throughout, most of which is concentrated at the framing edges. Unexamined out of glazed frame. The mount with heavy surface scratching verso. There is also a large amount of unidentified smooth residue, as well as traces of glue from previous stickers (see online illustration). Light nicks commensurate with age. Some light surface dirt, and fine craquelure throughout. There are some small areas of flaking/associate loss to the red pigment around the sitter's outer hairline. Some light undulation to the vellum predominantly to the lower right corner. The enamel later applied to the reverse flaking to the edges with some associated losses. Surface dirt lightly scattered throughout and largely concentrated to the framing edges. The reverse of the ivory sheet with a small patch of glue residue (approx. 3mm). The hair backing with some loss and a large patch of glue residue visible. The miniature and hair backing have come away from the mount and the lot is in 4 pieces (front and back of mount, hair detail backing, and ivory miniature). Will need re-framing. Undulation to the sheet and surface scratches throughout with two stronger scratches vertically to the sitter's head (approx. 1.5cm) and horizontally to the sitter's left breast (approx. 1.5cm). There is a small brown/green blemish to the sitter's waist (lower left as you look at it, approx. 3mm) together with some associated clear residue moving left to the sitter's right arm - it is unclear what has caused this. The clear residue at least, looks like it could be removed with restoration. Unexamined out of glazed frame. The mount with a number of small dints throughout, and nicks around the edges, the backing seam also with some splitting. The reverse with two areas of glue residue where previous labels have been removed. Condition Report Disclaimer

Tinkle Goes to School, 1950s, two preliminary sketches for an unpublished Orlando book, both watercolour and pencil on paper, each with pencilled artist's notes, the first depicting Tinkle possibly receiving a delivery of ice cream, the second showing Grace (possibly sewing), with the 3 kittens misbehaving nearby, mount apertures 17.1 x 19.8cm (6 6/8 x 7 3/4ins) & 17.0 x 19.8cm (6 3/4 x 7 3/4ins) respectively, framed and glazed (39.6 x 41.0cm & 39.6 x 41.1cm respectively), the first with title inscribed on verso, both versos with inscribed exhbition number relating to the Kathleen Hale Memorial Exhibition held at the Redfern Gallery in 2001 (no.'s 94B & 94A respectively), together with a small collection of 14 pencil or pen & ink sketches, on 5 sheets of paper (rectos and versos, 2 folded), being rough preliminary drawings for Orlando books, 3 with touches of watercolour and/or coloured crayon, most with pencilled artist's notes or captions, which include: 'Miss. TT (presumably Miss Topsy-Turvey) reads stories'; 'two children, boy & girl,dressed as P. & B. [Pansy & Blanche] - dancing in fancy dress [with the kittens] while TT. plays the piano'; 'Why can't I have a prize too?'; 'Sad Tinkle', the other scenes including: a Christmas Tree scene; a theatre scene; kittens serving at a sweet shop; the kittens and children playing musical instruments, plus a small watercolour sketch of a house and garden, with artist's pencilled notes on verso relating to an Orlando story: 'O's Pantomime / for a moment Grace disappears, then at height of anxiety - several Graces appear - which is the real one? ...', and an uncut printed full sheet of Orlando Goes to the MoonQty: (9)Footnote: Miss Topsy-Turvey was a character in Orlando the Marmalade Cat: The Frisky Housewife, (1956). The pencilled notes relating to 'O's Pantomine' would have been written during the 1950s when Rupert Doone asked Kathleen Hale to write a Christmas pantomime for the Group Theatre to perform. The project was never completed, but the book Orlando and the Three Graces was born out of the ashes and eventually published in 1965.
