A 19th Century Continental polychrome decorated porcelain vase on stand, with pierced rim, painted with alternate panels of figures in medieval dress and floral sprays, within gilded borders, flanked by mask head handles, 42 cm high CONDITION REPORTS Wear and scuffs. Top has an inner rim which suggests probably originally has a lid/cover (now lacking). The jewel decorations around the body are "trompe l'oeil" as they are painted to appear three-dimensional but are in fact concave. Some wear to decoration to edges and extremities. There are no makers marks nor other identifying marks to the base of this piece.

Bears Japanese character mark to main body, and marks to base. Vase 2 - has general wear, scratches, dirt, also has various firing faults including a large 2.5cm approx chip to base, bears Japanese character to main body and marks to base.

JOHN CONSTABLE (1776-1837) "Medway Summer - 1803" - study of two three-mast barques, black ink collectors stamp "I" in an octagon for the Ingram Collection, verso, pencil with wash, 7" x 9". See illustration Provenance: The collection of Sir Bruce Stirling Ingram OBE, MC (1877-1963) (Lugt 1405A) Sotheby`s 17th March 1965. Sir Bruce Stirling Ingram was editor of the Illustrated London News for 63 years. He was a prolific collector amassing over 3,000 works, primarily of maritime interest. Examples from his collection can be found in the National Maritime Museum. In 1803 John Constable spend time on the East Indiaman "The Coutts" accompanying his friend and the captain Robert Torin, on a tour around the Medway and Thames before the ship set sail for China. It is believed this work was one of almost 140 rapid compositions he created during the trip. "I was on board nearly a month and was much employed in making drawings of ships in all situations. I saw all sorts of weather. Some the most delightful and some the most melancholy. But such is the enviable state of a painter that he finds delight in every dress nature can possibly assume". Charles Leslie (1794-1859) "Leslie`s Memoirs of Constable" - a letter from John Constable to John Dunthorne.
