By reason of the ships position relative to the smokescreen, HMS Gloucester bore the brunt of the fire from a Littoria class Battleship for some twenty minutes. He handled his ship throughout with coolness and good judgement and transmitted valuable reports. This is more commendable as considerable doubt existed as to Gloucesters ability to maintain high speed owing to a defective bearing which materialised two days before and had been rectified by ships staff the previous day and must have been the cause of great anxiety. Mentioned in Despatches for outstanding courage, fortitude and resolution in the Battle of Crete.', Captain Rowley is buried at the Alexandria Hadra War Cemetery in Egypt, the lot also includes an original photograph of this fine Naval Officer in full dress uniform as a Commander, wearing WW1 service medals, the items come direct from family

The cartouche is supported by a bear and a bull, the classic representations of a sellers and buyers market, and both are shown in morning dress. The secondary cartouche is flanked by King Midas who has coins spilling from his waist and Dame Fortune who is blindfolded and holding a pair of scissors and whose arm rests on the 'rota fortunae' or wheel of fortune, a symbol of the capricious nature of fate. In the upper corners of the map are representations of Mercury carrying an elaborate compass and the goddess Demeter spilling her cornucopia into the market. The stock exchange itself is shown as a castellated courtyard within whose walls commodities, gilts and bonds are depicted being traded by a variety of humorous vignettes.

Lot 59

Circle of Domenico Riccio, called Brusasorci, Italian c.1516-1567- Study of a female figure in Classical dress, possibly Diana, with her arm raised; black chalk, pen and red ink heightened with white on laid paper, with watermark, 30.2 x 18.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Brusasorci was a Mannerist artist from Verona, who is believed to have studied under Giovanni Francesco Caroto (c.1480-c.1555) and Niccolò Giolfino (1476-1555). He is particularly celebrated for his frescos, including those which he produced for the Municipio in Trento, the San Pietro Martire and the Palazzo Vescovile, both in Verona. He often depicted dramatic Classical subjects, such as the fresco of Phaeton which he painted on the ceiling of the Palazzo Chiericati, a work for which he is particularly lauded.

Lot 37

Follower of Thomas Gainsborough, RA FRSA, British 1727-1788- Portrait of a lady, half-length, in a white dress with a red shawl and feathers in her hair, within a feigned oval; oil on canvas, 76 x 63.7 cm., (unframed). Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's South Kensington, 7 March 2002, lot 323 (£1,410). Private Collection, UK.

Lot 206

Henry Edridge, ARA, British 1768-1821- Prince Ernest, Duke of Cumberland, 5th son of King George III, in Windsor Uniform with the Order of the Garter; pencil and watercolour on paper, 33.5 x 24.4 cm. Provenance: with Andrew Clayton-Payne, London. Private Collection, UK.  Note: A preparatory study for Edridge's pencil and grey wash drawing, dating to 1802 and of similar dimensions, which is housed in the Royal Collection Trust [RCIN 913852] and which belongs to a large group of drawings there by Edridge, the prime versions of which were commissioned by George III. Several versions of the same portrait, with small variations, were made by Edridge, doubtless as a result of further royal commissions - see for example one which appeared at Christie's, London, 20 March 1984, lot 75. In this preparatory sketch, Prince Ernest is depicted wearing Windsor Uniform, a form of dress which was introduced by George III in 1779, comprising a tail coat of dark blue cloth with scarlet collar and cuffs. He also wears the insignia of the Order of the Garter. As a young man Edridge was apprenticed to the portrait engraver William Pether (c.1739-1821). He later attended the Royal Academy Schools, and from 1786 he exhibited as a miniaturist at the Royal Academy. It is for small full-length portrait drawings that he is best known. These are as evocative of their period as are those by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) of sitters in early 19th-century France or Rome.

Lot 26

Circle of Jonathan Richardson, English 1665-1745- Portrait of Mrs Carey, half-length, wearing a blue dress and shawl, with pearls in her hair; oil on canvas, inscribed 'Mrs Carey' (lower right), bears inscription 'Mrs CAREY / by Sir Godfrey Kneller' on the upper horizontal stretcher bar, bears old label inscribed 'Mrs CAREY / by / SIR GODFREY KNELLER / bought at Lord Jersey's / sale at Bicester' attached to the frame verso, 76 x 63.5 cm. Provenance: Lord Jersey (according to the label attached to the frame). Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 27 October 1976, lot 296 (as 'KNELLER'). Private Collection, UK.

Lot 235

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA, Hungarian / British 1869-1937- Spanish Dancers; oil on board, signed and dated 'de László / 1927.' (lower left), 91.8 x 67.6 cm. Photo credit: de Laszlo Archive © de Laszlo Foundation. Provenance: The artist's family. Anon. sale, Phillips, London, 12 January 1993, lot 72. with Trinity House Paintings, London, no.1658. Private Collection, UK. Literature: The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no.110490. Note: Studio Inventory p.27 (150): 'The Spanish Dancers appeared at the Spanish Club and the Artist invited the Senora to pose for him. She arrived with her partner (her husband) and to avoid any jealousy they were painted as a group. The Senor, however, was annoyed to find himself providing a background for his wife’s figure.' Although primarily celebrated as a society portraitist, executing commissions for high-society and prominent contemporaries, de László could also be inspired by an individual's striking appearance to produce a likeness. He was highly impressed by the picture ‘El Jaleo’ by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) when he visited Boston in 1908, remarking ‘No contemporary picture has impressed me so profoundly. It displays Sargent’s master of his art and reproduces the very atmosphere of Spain, together with the lovely figure of the passionate and graceful dancer’ [Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston no. P7s1]. Indeed, he was clearly particularly interested in the subject of Spanish dancers, and frequently chose to depict his sitters in their associated elaborate and distinctive costume. For example, he painted the dancer and actress Tina Meller (née Agustina Marqués López) on multiple occasions wearing Spanish dress, including in his 1929 portrait which sold recently at Christie's, London, 6 December 2021 for £23,750 [de László Archive Trust catalogue no.112242]. Two other portraits of Meller in traditional Spanish dress are listed in the catalogue raisonné, one having been destroyed by fire in 1989, and the other in an unknown location [de László Archive Trust catalogue nos 6317 and 6316]. The present work is further comparable with de László's painting 'Señorita Adrina Otéro, A Spanish Dancer' (19350) [de László Archive Trust catalogue no.6494] who wears a traditional flamenco skirt. The present work is characteristic of de László's mature style, exhibiting his free, masterful, and loose brushwork, which imparts a palpable sense of motion, invigorating the composition and gesturing towards the swirling movement of the dancers in action.

Lot 155

Thomas Kent Pelham, British c.1831-1907- A lady collecting flowers in her bonnet; oil on canvas, signed with monogram 'TKP' (lower right), 74.8 x 60.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Pelham's oeuvre consists largely of genre paintings and charming figure studies. He often depicted his subjects in rural Mediterranean settings, who are clothed in elaborate regional dress. The present work almost establishes the viewer as a passer-by, greeted by the sitter as they interrupt her brief moment of rest from collecting flowers in her bonnet.

Lot 29

Follower of Antoine Pesne,  French 1683-1757- Portrait of a boy, half-length, in theatrical dress; oil on canvas, bears an old inscribed label in German on the reverse of the upper horizontal stretcher bar, 60.4 x 47.4 cm., (unframed). Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  Though French-born, Pesne served as a painter to the Prussian court and produced many portraits of the royal family and key court figures, including of the first two Kings of Prussia, Frederick I (1657-1713) and Frederick William I (1688-1740). The present work bears similarities to the portrait attributed to Pesne of 'Frederick II of Prussia, later Frederick the Great', in the UK's Royal Collection [RCIN 405262].

Lot 229

Édouard Cabane, French 1857-1942- Portrait of a girl, bust-length, wearing a blue dress, with flowers in her hair; oil on canvas, signed 'EDOUARD CABANE' (upper right), 46.2 x 38.3 cm. Note: Cabane studied under Adolphe William Bouguereau (1825-1905) and Tony Robert-Fleury (1838-1912). He regularly exhibited his work at the Société des Artistes Français until 1932. He was awarded with a distinction at the Salon in 1886 and at the Universal Exhibition in 1889. The loose brushwork of this charming painting creates a dreamy, slightly hazy quality, which is typical of the artist's approach and which is evident in much of his work. He often depicted young figures holding flowers or toys, or adorned with bows, thereby imparting his portraits with an endearing sense of innocence.

Lot 233

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  Hungarian / British 1869-1937- Portrait of Sir Henry Birchenough, 1st Baronet, half-length, wearing white tie evening dress and decorations of Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'de László / 1926 [date partly obscured by frame]' (lower right), 82 x 58.5 cm. Provenance: By descent in the family. Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 22 July 1987, lot 86. Private Collection, UK. Literature: NPG Album 1925-27, p.13. Sitters’ Book II, opp. f. 50: Henry Birchenough October 19 1926. De László, Philip, January-June 1935 diary, entry 27 May, p.133. ‘The British South Africa Company Historical Catalogue & Souvenir of Rhodesia Empire Exhibition’, Johannesburg, 1936-1937, illustrated p.3. The Times, Thursday 13 May, 1937. The de László Archive Trust, ‘The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]’, no.3376. Note: The following entry is taken from The de László Archive Trust, ‘The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]’, no.3376: ‘De László recorded that two copies of this portrait were made by Sydney Percy Kendrick, one of the artist’s most favoured copyists, in 1935. In fact there exists one exact copy in the Bulawayo Club, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and Kendrick painted another portrait of the sitter, also half length, but wearing his robes and decorations as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George, which remains in a private collection. Sir Henry Birchenough was the second son of John Birchenough JP of Macclesfield, a silk manufacturer. Born in 1853, he was educated at Oxford University, University College London and in Paris. He was married to Mabel, third daughter of the Very Rev. G.G. Bradley, Dean of Westminster. There were two daughters of the marriage. The sitter was created a Baronet in 1920. Sir Henry came to public notice after the Second Boer War, when at the suggestion of Lord Milner he was dispatched to South Africa as Government Special Trade Commissioner, for which he received a CMG in 1905. His role in South Africa resulted in his report on “The present position and future prospects of British trade in South Africa” and initiating a system for monitoring foreign competition and commercial information that could be shared for the benefit of British traders. In 1905, he became a director of the British South Africa Company and from 1925 held the post of President of the company until his death in 1937. In this respect, he was particularly close to Baron Emile d’Erlanger, who financed nearly all of the railways of the British South Africa Company from 1892 onwards, and who also sat to de László. Sir Henry also took a leading role in 1905 in the negotiations between representatives of the Rhodesian settlers and the colonial office which resulted in the country eventually becoming a self-governing colony. The sitter was a member of the board of Directors of the Rhodesian Railway company from 1906 and became Chairman of the Rhodesia and Mashonaland Railway Companies in 1925; a position which he too held until his death. In 1906, he also served as a Member of the Advisory Committee to the Board of Trade and a Member of the Royal Commission on Shipping Rings. An advocate of preferential tariffs, he was also a member of Joseph Chamberlain’s Tariff Commission. He furthermore held a directorship of the Imperial and Continental Gas Association, and was Chairman of the Beit Railway Trust from 1931-1937. During and after the First World War, Sir Henry played a role in the reconstruction process, chairing the board of Trade Textiles Committee in 1916 and served as a Member of Lord Balfour of Burleigh's Committee on Commercial and Industrial Policy. Still in 1916, he was created KCMG. In 1917 he was Chairman of the Royal Commission on Paper and Chairman of the Committee on Cotton Growing in the Empire. In 1918 he became Chairman of the Advisory Council to the Ministry of Reconstruction and Government Director of the British Dyestuffs Corporation. His interest in fiscal reform and knowledge of Britain’s economic competitors within her colonies stood him in good stead in these positions, and subsequently after the war he went on to take a seat on the Southborough committee that had been appointed to explore ways of accelerating economic development in British East Africa. He published many articles on political and economic subjects in the nineteenth century and was a Fellow of the Royal Empire Society. He was promoted to GCMG in 1935. Following his death on 12 May 1937, his ashes, together with those of his wife, were interred in a pillar of the Birchenough Bridge, which still bears his name and spans the Sabi River in modern-day Zimbabwe.’

Lot 156

Francesco Peluso, Italian 1836-1916- A merry gathering; oil on canvas, signed 'Peluso' (lower right), 40 x 60 cm. Provenance:  Anon. sale, Sotheby's, New York, 9 June 1987, lot 516.  with G.M. Lotinga Fine Art Galleries, London.  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present work depicts a group of figures in historical dress making and listening to music. As is the case here, the artist often placed his subjects in a setting of romanticised ruins, recalling the rustic outdoor settings of the 'fêtes galante' scenes of French rococo artists including Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) and Francois Boucher (1703-1770).

Lot 35

Circle of Joseph Wright of Derby, ARA, British 1734-1797- Portrait of a lady, bust-length, wearing a pink dress and holding a book; oil on canvas, bears inscribed label ‘The Marquess de Amodio / British Embassy, Paris / (stamped on stretcher) / -19th c-’ on the stretcher, 61.1 x 50.4 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's South Kensington, 9 September 2004, lot 48 (£1,195). Private Collection, UK. Note: Wright of Derby studied under the portraitist Thomas Hudson (1701-1779). He established himself as a portrait painter in both Derby and Liverpool, where he took on commissions for prominent contemporaries, after having worked with Hudson in London for fifteen months. The present work can be compared on both stylistic and compositional grounds to many of his fine portraits of women.

Lot 245

Publio de Tommasi, Italian 1849-1914- A seated gentleman examining a picture; pencil, watercolour, and bodycolour heightened with touches of gum arabic on paper, signed, inscribed and dated 'P. De. Tommasi / Roma 82.' (lower left), 53 x 35.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: De Tommasi's watercolours often constitute genre scenes populated by figures in Italian regional dress or clerical costume. The present work is unusual for the artist in its representation of a finely-dressed connoisseur, who inspects the picture before him, which is tantalisingly obscured from our view.

Lot 159

Raoul Arus, French 1848-1921- A French soldier with his horse drinking from a puddle; oil on panel, signed 'R. Arus' (lower left), 21.7 x 27 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Arus's paintings almost exclusively depict figures in 19th-century military dress, either in battle or on the march, with his works typically presenting cavalry officers either mounted on or accompanied by their horses. The present work places a particular emphasis on the close relationship between a soldier and his horse, with the central figure looking on with care and concern as his horse pauses to drink some water on their journey.

Lot 160

Nellie Joshua, British 1877-1960- Polishing Boots; oil on canvas, signed 'N. JOSHUA' (lower left), 61.1 x 45.9 cm. ARR. Provenance: Private Collection, UK (by descent). Note: Joshua's output consists largely of genre scenes featuring figures in historical dress. The present work depicts a male figure seated on a bench, surrounded by the shoes which he is in the process of polishing, conversing, perhaps flirtatiously, with a young woman who smiles back at him. The pile of laundry to the left suggests that she is a laundry-maid, which contrasts with her stylish, pristine clothing, and thereby illustrates the somewhat fanciful and romanticised nature of Joshua's painting.

Lot 164

Frank Moss Bennett, British 1874-1952- Outside the Old Britannia; oil on canvas, signed, inscribed, and dated 'F M Bennett Sketch 1937' (lower left), 38 x 51 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is a preparatory study for a finished painting by Bennett, of similar dimensions, which sold at Sotheby's Billingshurst, 1 February 1994 (£7,000). The final painting diverges in composition only slightly from this original sketch, with Bennett altering the details of the clothing of the sitter second from the left. The composition is characteristic of Bennett's oeuvre, which consists largely of genre scenes depicting figures in historical dress, often seated and engaged in leisurely or familial pursuits.

Lot 25

Circle of Charles Jervas, Irish 1675-1739- Portrait of Henrietta Nairne, half-length, in a blue dress and wrap, within a feigned oval; oil on canvas, indistinctly inscribed 'Henrietta Nairn [sic.]' (upper right), bears inscription 'Henrietta 8th Daughter of / William Lord Nairne, born 14th / March 1714.' on the reverse, 76.2 x 63.4 cm., (unframed). Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's South Kensington, 5 September 1996, lot 13. Anon. sale, Christie's South Kensington, 7 March 2002, lot 312. Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work depicts Henrietta Nairne, the eighth daughter of William Murray, 2nd Lord Nairne, who was a Scottish peer and Jacobite. Murray took part in the Jacobite Rising of 1715, for which he was found guilty of treason and sentenced to death, until the Indemnity Act of 1717 allowed for his release.
