At The age of 21 he joined the Royal Navy on the 11th January 1899 aboard HMS 'Vivid II'. Taking part in the Zeebrugge Raid in April 1918, he was awarded the DSC for his actions. The London Gazette of the 23rd July, 1918 reports.' William Mark Sutton, RN. Displayed wonderful leadership and devotion to duty. At the commencement of the operations it appeared doubtful whether sufficient head of steam could be kept in the boilers to enable 'daffodil' to perform the duties required. Mr Sutton's untiring exertions, initiative and resource enabled this difficulty to be overcome. Throughout the pushing operation he managed to maintain 160lb of steam, a pressure which would have seemed impossible in view of previous experience. The engine-room was holed and two compartments flooded, but these were immediately and effectively dealt with by Mr Sutton'The Zeebrugge Raid was an attempt by the Royal Navy to block the Belgian port of Bruges -Zeebrugge by sinking obsolete vessels in the channel in order to stop German U-Boats from leaving port. Two Mersey Ferries 'Daffodil' and 'Iris II' were used during the raid accompanying HMS 'Vindictive' in an attempt to land raiding parties to destroy German gun emplacements. The wind direction changed and removed the smoke screen cover from HMS 'Vindictive' which then drew heavy fire from the German guns. The raid was hailed as success by the Admiralty who used it to promote Allied propaganda.Provenance: The group was purchased direct from the family by Donald in the 1980s
