A late 15th century Flemish carved oak figural plaque depicting the LamentationProbably originally from an altarpiece, circa 1480Carved in low relief with the lifeless semi-clad body of Christ recumbent on the Virgin's lap and attended by Joseph of Arimathea, Nikodemos, John the Beloved, Mary and Mary Magdalene, the figures clad in contemporary dress with folded drapery, and headdresses, the rear with remnants of two paper labels, one apparently an indistinct inventory label marked 'JOSEPH BATLL*' and a paper exhibition label inscribed Exposicion de Arte Religioso, El Arte en la Pasion de Nuestro Senor, Siglos XIII al XVIII, the group probably originally with gessoed and polychrome and decoration, the group probably originally with gessoed and polychrome and decoration, 43cm high x 37cm wide x 8.5cm deepFootnotes:ProvenanceJosep Batlló y Casanovas (1855-1934), Spanish industrialist, businessman and owner of Casa Batllo, Barcelona, the house commissioned from the architect Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926) and completed between 1904 and 1906.The plaque was apparently purchased by Josep in the last quarter of the 19th Century from Philip Bossard of Dayton, Ohio, USA for the Batlló family collection of Gothic religious art.The Bossard family apparently originally had land in Swabia prior to 1478 and had connections to the late gothic church of St. Oswald Church, the 'Christliche Vereinigung' and the Twelve Articles of the Swabian League in the early 16th century. The Bossard family retained their Catholic beliefs even after the Reformation and the family business later turned to jewellery making and silver smithing. In the 17th or early 18th Century the Bossard Family crafted an heirloom silver Cup commemorating Biene Bossard fighting in The Battle of Marignano 1515. The Cup was altered in 1874 by Philip Bossard's father for his son in Switzerland. When Josep Batlló died his eldest son Antonio inherited the plaque and managed the collection and Gaudi estate until 1954.The plaque was subsequently bequeathed to the Uruguayan poet Susana Luisa María de las Mercedes Soca (1906-1959) and when she tragically died in a plane crash the plaque passed to the Rothschild family.Joel Rothschild family trustExhibited'El Arte en la Passion de Nuestro Senor', Palacio De La Virreina, La Rambla, Barcelona, 1945 (Ex Batllo collection), collection of Don Antonio Batlló, No. 94, p. 57Sold with two copies of the original exhibition catalogue. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
