UNIFORM AND RELIC GROUPING OF A LEDO ROAD C.B.I. VETERAN World War II uniform, map, medals and 'blood chit' grouping of Lt. Robert Finkel, 181st Signal Repair Co., 4011 Signal Battalion, which was crucial in the operation of the important Ledo Road. The Ledo Road was an all-weather overland route between India and China, built during World War II to enable the Allies to deliver supplies to China, after the Japanese cut off the Burma Road in 1942. Of the 1,726 kilometres long road, 1,033 kilometres are in Burma and 632 kilometres in China with the remainder in India. The road was constructed in record time during the autumn of 1943. Included in this grouping is: Finkel's dress uniform jacket and garrison cap, silver wire sewn-in Signal Corps and U.S. insignia, theater-made cloth and wire C.B.I. patch on left shoulder, and a very rare Ledo Road theater-made cloth shoulder patch on right; a special wall hanging medal plaque with five medals with four ribbons, lieutenant's bar, and Meritorious Service ribbon, including U.S. China War Memorial Medal (numbered), American Campaign Medal, Asian-Pacific Campaign medal, Good Conduct Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. The plaque with an engraved plate citing Finkel's war service record; a lucite tablet encasing Finkel's chest ribbons, second lieutenant's bar and Signal Corps insignia; and Finkel's 'blood chit', 10.5 x 8.75, silk multi-part construction displaying flags of USA and the Republic of China, along with with C.B.I. insignia and handwritten text in Chinese: 'Americans who came to China to help win the war soldiers and civilians united together to save and protect. 34th year of Republic of China', on a wooden plaque with perspex cover. Of particular interest is a blueprint map of the Ledo Road, from Kunming (China) to Ledo (India) through Burma, 31 x 17 in., signed 'Lt. Finkel' at lower right, annotated with gas depots at Waingmow and Mangshih, stamped 'SECRET' in two places. Mounted, a closed, clean tear from left margin, else very good. Robert Finkel enlisted in the Army Signal Corps in Los Angeles in April 1942, and was sent to the South Asian Theater after training. In late 1944 he joined the 4011th Signal battalion. He saw action in the field from January to September 1945, was promoted to Second Lieutenant, and received a Unit Citation and two Bronze Battle Stars. After the war back in Los Angeles, he had a career as a TV producer and director, including The Eddie Fisher Show, Bob Newhart Show, Andy Williams Show, and many more, and famously produced a TV comeback concert for Elvis Presley in 1968.

FROM THE ESTATE OF GEN. CLARENCE R. HUEBNER, COMMANDER OF THE 1ST INFANTRY DIVISION IN THE FIRST WAVE AT OMAHA BEACH Fine pair of presentation items memorializing Gen. Huebner's leadership of the 'Big Red One', includes: Manuscript D.S., 1p large oblong folio (23.5 x 17 in. sight), [n.p.], Feb. 12, 1959, an entirely hand-lettered and illustrated certificate presented to Huebner soon after his retirement by 'The Remnants of the 'Big Red One''. Signed at the bottom by twenty surviving members of the division who served under Huebner's command in World War II, including Silver Star recipient THEODORE L. DOBOL (1915-1996). Above Huebner's name appears the division motto: 'No Mission Too Difficult, No Sacrifice Too Great. Duty First!' The illustrations, executed entirely in ink and watercolors, depict a color guard flanking the Great Seal of the United States at top, with a 'Fighting First' soldier on an invasion beach at bottom, with the division's shoulder insignia at the top corners and the World War I and World War II Victory Medals at bottom. Scrollwork at top lists the division's notable campaigns in both wars. The artist's signature 'Harris S[taff] S[ergeant] HQ 1st Inf Div' appears in minute letters at the bottom edge. The certificate is mounted in a wood frame, and is in very good condition. WITH: Cast-aluminum presentation statuette, 9.5 in. tall, depicting a 1st Division soldier in dress uniform standing at attention, with the division's insignia visible on his helmet, shoulders, and on either side of the metal base. The front of the base again bears the division's motto, as quoted above. The statuette is mounted on a black granite base, bearing a plastic presentation plaque reading: 'Lt. Gen. C.R. Huebner, State C. D. Director', referring to this role as Civil Defense Director for New York following his retirement from the U.S. Army. The statuette shows some tarnish and oxidation overall, with a minor break at the ankles, else very good. Two pieces.

STERLING SILVER ITALIAN ALPINE CORPS EMBLEM A most attractive sterling silver emblem issued by the Italian 'IV Corpo d'Armada Alpino' ('4th Army Alpine Corps'), 3.5 in. diameter, depicting an eagle perched atop a mountain with the name of the corps beneath, all in high relief. An '800' silver proof mark appears along the edge. On the reverse, there is a 1/2 in. pin pointed downward, and a similar pin appears to have been placed above it - now broken. From the angle of the pin, we suspect that this silver emblem may have been attached at one time to a sash, or perhaps a piece of dress equipment. Fine condition. Between 1939-1940 the Alpine divisions incorporated in the Alpine Army Corps which operated on the Greek front, and on the Russian front with the 8th Army. Of the 57,000 Alpine soldiers who left for Russia, only 11,000 returned. It was dissolved on the 1 March 1943.

MASSES OF WOUNDED UNION SOLDIERS ARRIVE IN NEW YORK Graphic war-date D.S., 4pp. legal folio, [New York, ca. October, 1862], a statement submitted by one 'R. Ellsworth' for labor supplied to U.S.-chartered vessels, almost all concerning the carriage of wounded Union soldiers. Some of the entries seek reimbursement for: '...removing disabled soldiers from Str. Atlantic...clearing the vessel of Arms, Baggage & Bedding...removing disabled soldiers from Str. Daniel Webster...removing disabled soldiers from Camden & Amboy Rail Road Boat...removing Convalescent Soldiers from the City & Island Hospitals to Fort Hamilton...' A heart-rending conclusion is penned at the end of the document by Thomas W. Johnson, the approving agent for the Assistant Quartermaster General. In part: '...Much of the help employed in the removal of the sick & wounded soldiers...was required in protecting the men from the masses of men, women & children who on such occasions rushed to the boats in overwhelming numbers and also in dealing out shirts & drawers...for the naked soldiers whose blood soaked and filthy garments hand been thrown overboard and in assisting to dress them and remove them from the Transports...' One insect nibble at a fold, else very good.

EVA BRAUN'S BELTED BLUE DRESS WITH INITIALED NAME TAG Fashionable, detailed blue dress once owned and worn by Eva Braun, the wife of Adolf Hitler who would commit suicide with him in the Fuhrerbunker in the last days of the war. The dress is constructed of navy blue rayon, with snaps and hooks at the upper part of the chest and side so that Braun's head could fit through the neck opening, and allowing access from one side for 'personal' reasons. Seven parallel rows of matching fabric-covered buttons are sewn down to the waist which itself is fitted with a decorative belt which could also be unsnapped. The collar of the dress bears an elegantly embroidered cloth tag: 'E. B.' carefully stitched thereto a long time ago. The initials pre-date the commonly seen 'butterfly' monogram designed for Braun by Albert Speer, so this dress would likely be from the earliest days of Braun's relationship with Hitler. In excellent condition. Our consignor, a 40+ year dealer/collector, purchased this item and other personal possessions belonging to Braun approximately thirty years ago from an ex-O.S.S. agent Eugene Frankenfeld. Included with the dress is a copy of Frankenfield's original letter of provenance, dated April 14, 1976, indicating that he became Commanding Intelligence Officer for District Greater Salzburg in May of 1945, and confiscated luggage deposited by Braun and her family from a hotel in a small town outside of Salzburg. He lists the items he recovered, specifically mentioning '...1 box lot of Eva Braun dresses, undergarments, coat, scarves, hats...', among many other personal relics.

Dress Virgin of the 18th century.Modelled wax. Cloth vestments.Eighteenth century frame in carved and gilded wood.Measurements: 80 cm (total with crown); 117 x 88 x 17 cm (frame).Dress images are figures worked in detail only on the face and hands, on a structure of wood carved (in this case wax) to a greater or lesser extent. These processional images were cheaper than fully carved ones, and were therefore common throughout Spain. The visible parts are covered with a thin layer of stucco and polychromed, while the rest is covered with real clothes. These images were particularly appreciated for their naturalism, as the fact that they were dressed in real clothes gave them a greater degree of realism than those that were simply carved, which were often not of sufficient quality to achieve the degree of naturalism so sought after in religious art from the Baroque period onwards. Some of these "cap i pota", another name for this type of figure, were made articulated, so that their position could be changed and they could be dressed more easily.
