A Late Victorian Civil Court Dress Uniform, to Thomas Sims Esq. C.B., comprising coatee with heavy gold braid to collar, cuffs and flaps, trousers with 2'' gold oak leaf-patterned braid, white breeches, two pairs of white stockings, red leather and gilt metal sword belt, sword sling and Sam Browne belt, all in a japanned tin case named to the lid. Coatee with several small moth holes near left armpit and slight staining internally. One moth hole to right sleeve. Otherwise good. Superficial surface moth damage to dress trousers but otherwise good. Breeches with several small moth holes to front, otherwise good. Other items in good condition. Case with some rusting overall. Coat measures 42cm shoulder to shoulder, 91cm chest, 86cm waist, 56cm sleeve, 46cm front length and 93cm back length.

Old damages, mainly around the edges, have been filled and retouched. The varnish is very matte, discoloured and has imbibed dirt, giving the painting a grubby appearance overall. There is a layer of surface dirt present.

There are minor undulations across the surface. The paint layer has areas of raised and flaking paint, mainly located at the edges of the canvas. There is extensive retouching across the surface, notably in the sitter’s face. The overpaint has been applied in a wholesale, brushy manner which is not well matched to the original. The varnish has uneven gloss with some very shiny areas. There is a layer of surface dirt across the surface.

The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good, stable condition. There are areas of retouching, particularly in the sitter’s face and along the top edge of the work. These are fairly well matched when viewed from a normal distance. The varnish is clear, even and semi-glossy. There are some losses to the gilding of the frame on the inner edges of the slip.

The interior is with leather sweatband and silk pleated lining. Tailor label for Gieves London ... Full dress sword belt with gilt buckle sword slings and two lines of bullion indicating a junior Officer .... Full dress bullion epaulettes with silver bullion foul anchor and no twist tassels indicating a Sub Lieutenant. Housed in the original black tin transit/storage box. The lid with painted name of H.G. Grace RN. Clean condition near VGC bullion bright. Lt Cdr Grace served during WW2 his ships included HMS Varnoc Norway 1940 St.Nazaire 1941 HMS Quail Salerno Landings, he remained in the Royal Navy after the end of the war.

Royal Company of Archers Queen Bodyguard for Scotland Victorian full dress coatee etc. A fine rare example of dark green Melton cloth, with dark green velvet facing to the high collar and cuffs. Each richly embroidered with thistle pattern gold embroidery, the latter also with gilt buttons, which are repeated to the double line of 17 buttons to the front (one absent). The tails again with velvet turn backs, thistle pattern gold embroidery skirt ornaments and gold embroidery thistle tail ornaments. .... Complete with impressive box pattern green velvet epaulettes each with bullion gilt wire crescent encircling a padded cushion embroidered with a Scottish thistle and title. The thistle embroidery is repeated to the strap of the epaulette and incorporated three arrows. Both complete with original fire gilt mounted button and with fine twist wire tassels ... Together with dark green Melton overalls with 2 inch wide gold thistle pattern lace down the seams. Bullion remains fresh and bright. Minor age wear. Irish Leitrim Rifles Militia Victorian glengarry badge circa 1874-81. Good rare die-stamped white metal crowned Celtic cross bearing strung bugle and Harp; at the foot of the cross, a tablet LEITRIM and two shamrock sprays. Replacement loops otherwise VGC Raised in 1793 at Carrick-on-Shannon as Leitrim Militia, redesignated Leitrim Rifles in 1855 and became 8th Bn. Rifle Brigade on Friday 1st July 1881. Disbanded 31st July 1889. This is the actual piece photographed as No. 1284 in Head-dress Badges of the British Army.
