Germaine Krull (1897 - 1985) :A highly collectable loose-leaf, formerly string-bound album of black and white/sepia photographs of African scenes, buildings and peoples, chiefly by the renowned photographer. Each cream coloured card page measuring 35.3 m x 41.1 cms approx with three, four or five prints and with many hand written pencil annotations to the mounts as well as many bearing the stamp verso ''Photographic du SERVICE de L'INFORMATION du France Combattante en Afrique Francoise Libre''. Numerous also have type-written labels or negative reference numbers verso. Germaine Krull was born in Poznan in 1897. During the First World War she attended a photography school in Munich and subsequently opened a studio there. In the early 1920's she shared a studio in Berlin producing a series of photographs of nudes. By the late 1920's she was considered one of the top three photographers in Paris, producing some exceptional images of architecture including bridges and the renowned Eiffel Tower. Some of these images have realised very great sums. In the late 1930's she had a studio in Monte Carlo and produced images of architecture, vehicles and well known (as well as little-known) people. She was not impressed with German occupied France and aimed to join the Free French Forces in Africa. Arriving in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo in September 1942, over the next year and a half she produced a considerable number of photographic images of landscapes, buildings, industry and the native people, several of which feature in the lot being sold which comprises 27 album pages and some 107 individual atmospheric black and white/sepia prints.
