Manner of John Hoskins, early/mid 19th century- Portrait of a woman in a black dress with white ruff and ruby necklace; oil on copper, in a carved wooden frame, 20x18cm Note: Label to verso of frame indicates this may be a copy of a Houbraken engraving after a miniature by J Hoskins in the Royal Collection. Houbraken indicated in his engraving series that it may depict Mary Queen of Scots, it is also suggested it is possibly a portrait of Margaret Roper, daughter of Sir Thomas More.

Sir Thomas Beauchamp-Proctor, 2nd Bt (1756-1827) was a notable collector who was advised, after his inheritance in 1773, by the artist Henry Walton. Sir Thomas` most celebrated acquisition was Poussin`s `Adoration of the Magi`, now in the National Gallery, London.
