Stage Props of The Great Valdo - a stage ventiloquist`s dummy, Daisy, wearing a white and pink dress, 94cm tall; associated paper work. Jack Riley (born 1906) was a star of the Sheffield scene throughout the heyday of the Music Hall, performing as a ventriloquist and magician from the age of 16. He began his career as `Valdo`, working alongside `The Clever Conjurer` Mr W. S. Peacock with performances during the intervals in Saturday morning film shows, before moving on to both the Empire and Hippodrome theatres in the city and being invited to entertain passengers on the rapidly expanding cruise liner circuit. In 1931 he married soprano and pianist Gertrude Dearden. A contemporary Sheffield newspaper, in an account of the wedding recorded the fact that `many well known artistes were present`, and the two took to the stage together as Valdo and Partner, performing widely with `singing, comedy, ventriloquism & mystery` up until the outbreak of the Second World War. After the war Jimmy and Daisy, the Dummies central to his act, came out only occasionally, mostly for private functions, and have slept undisturbed away from the limelight for the majority of the last fifty years. Provenance: The family of Mr Jack Riley, The Great Valdo.
