Film costume interest - 1890's-style satin, sequin embroidered bodice and skirt, full skirt with slight train, the fitted bodice with peplum back, embroidered with sequins, the collar and cuffs trimmed with black velvet, believed to be made in 1945 and worn by Margaret Lockwood in the film 'I'll Be Your Sweetheart'. With the label of renowned costumier B. J. Simmons & Co. of Covent Garden, known for their production of historical and period costume designs. There are film posters to show her wearing the dress, (in the photographs the black lace insert is not part of the lot.) Condition ReportBelieved to have been produced for the film in 1945; with a label stating B. J. Simmons & Co. 7 & 8 King St. Covent Garden. Miss Margaret Lockwood.

I did not take it off the dummy as we handle it as little as possible. all embroidery is undamaged

The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good condition overall. There is a network of age and impact cracks across the surface, in some areas are slightly raised. The varnish has degraded, becoming matte and dull. There are areas of overpaint, mainly located in the background, which are well matched to the original. There is a thick layer of surface dirt on the varnish which is contributing to the matte surface.

The paintings are both executed in oil on canvas supports which have been lined. The paint layers on both portraits are vulnerable with raised edges to age cracks and areas of loss. The portrait of the lady is in a worse condition, the canvas has pronounced stretcher bar marks and the paint layer is severely raised and cracking. Both paintings have extensive overpaint across the surface. The varnish layers have yellowed and vary in gloss.
